Because most phones are only designed with headsets in mind - unless you are a very tall person(!) 10m should be fine

It used to be a 100 meters according to the Z1010's white paper, but they changed it along with the polyphonic channels. Maybe it was found to unreliable over 20m in real terms. Theories not always right.

if it would have been 100 metres and u would like to mess with someone u still have to be within 10 metres unless the other DuDe also got long range bt so it wouldnt matter...
