Currently being previewed at CeBIT, BenQ's new P50 will feature Windows Mobile 2003, a 1.3 megapixel camera, integrated thumbboard, 18-bit colour screen and more.
Joining the manufacturer's previously announced P30 WAN handheld, based on the UIQ platform, BenQ is currently offering visitors to the CeBIT fair in Hannover a sneak peek of an upcoming model from the company to be powered by Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Phone Edition platform. To be dubbed the P50, the new device features a wide range of advanced features, including the first integrated thumbboard to be found in a GSM-based Windows Mobile device.
Powered by Intel's Bulverde processor, the P50 will offer quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz connectivity, complete with GPRS Class 10. Additionally, integrated Wi-Fi 802.11b and Bluetooth support will be present, as will expansion by means of an SDIO capable SD/MMC Card slot. Multimedia-conscious users will be particularly pleased to find the 2.8", 18-bit TFT screen of the P50 offering up 262,144 colours, while its integrated 1.3 megapixel camera represents a first for WAN handhelds.

Furthermor, the P50 also offers support for phone-centric technologies such as MMS, WAP 2.0 and J2ME MIDP 2.0, whilst claiming talk and standby times of up to 5 and 200 hours, respectively. These features have been crammed into a package measuring a minute 12 x 6 x 2 cm, at a weight of approximately 150 g.

BenQ representatives declined offering further information concerning the expected pricing and availability of the P50, due to the product still being in the early stages of development.

BenQ’s P50 Pocket PC Phone (their Treo 600 clone with the mini keyboard, integrated 1.3 megapixel digitial camera, and built-in WiFi), which is a pretty encouraging sign that they’ll actually introduce it in europe There’s also something or other about Taiwan building a nationwide WiFi network that cellphones like the P50 will be able to use to make wireless Voice over IP phone calls. But we’re mainly interested in the fact that the P50 is gonna be sold here.

BenQ P50 Pocket PC phone to be released commercially this month?

it will be available commercially (at least in Taiwan):

Danny Yao, managing director of BenQ Taiwan said that this month BenQ will introduce four cell phone models to the local Taiwanese market including one top model with camera resolution of 1.3 megapixel.

Coincidentally BenQ P50 features exactly 1.3 megapixel camera and on top of that...

... it is a full Pocket PC phone with built-in keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and since its keyboard is not sliding but fixed it resembles Treo smartphones powered by Palm OS operting system.

This phone has a quad-band GSM, so it would be usable also in USA perfectly and is powered by next generation Intel processor (not the old genaration as in MDA III / Xda III) ! To see many photos and technical details about this excellent Pocket PC phone click here.

Conclusion: it is not certain yet if BenQ means P50, but one is for sure: BenQ should release P50 Pocket PC phone by the end of this year, or later it will be too late to compete with established brands...

A bunch of new pics of it have turned up just in time to remind us of why we were so crushed out in the first place. The specs are hot (Bluetooth, WiFi, 1.3 megapixel digital camera, a large LCD screen, mini QWERTY keyboard), but they’d be even hotter if BenQ would hurry up and get the P50 out before the Treo 650 walks on stage and makes us forget all about this thing.

There are several upcoming wireless handhelds and smartphones that have been labeled possible "Treo killers." These are devices that will supposedly replace palmOne's Treo 600 in the hearts of users.

All of these are relatively small devices that have similar features to the Treo, including a built-in miniature keyboard. However, they run different operating systems.

The one many hard-core Pocket PC users are eagerly awaiting is the BenQ P50, which was announced this spring. Unfortunately, a report has surfaced that indicates that this model won't be available for a long time.

A Brighthand reader reports being told by this model's production manager that the P50 won't be out until sometime in the second half of next year. No reason was given for this delay.

The P50 won't be a smartphone. Instead it will be a cellular-wireless Pocket PC, although a very small one. It will run the Phone Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC.

How much memory it will have is also not yet known, and it might not have been determined yet. It will include an SD/MMC slot for additional storage.

One of the ways BenQ saved space on this model is by using a 2.8-inch screen. This display will be at the Pocket PC standard resolution of 240 by 320 pixels, and it will be able to display 262,000 colors.

This model will be surprisingly small for all it offers: 4.7 inches long, 2.4 inches wide, and 0.8 inches thick (120 mm by 60 mm by 20 mm). It will weigh about 5.3 ounces (150 g).

For comparison, the Treo 600 is 4.4 by 2.4 by .9 inches and it weighs about 6 ounces.

The P50 will use GSM/GPRS wireless networks and support 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. The fact that it will support 850 MHz is a strong indication that this device is intended for release in the U.S.
