Which model will work in both UK and Japan? |

Was: Anyone know the answer to this one?
I need a phone that will work both in the UK and also in Japan since I'll be going over quite often. Most of the phone shops (CPW, Link etc) know zilch about it and insist that my P900 will work despite attempts to tell them it won't!
Anyone here got any suggestions or ideas?

I think they use something like WCDMA or PDC (correct me if I'm wrong, I probably am!), but definitely not GSM like most other countries. |

Yeah, i would, but I already have a P900, my T610 and a Nokia (which is provided for me by work before anyone says anything!), so I might ditch the T610 for one I can use across in Japan. |

there are both WCDMA (UMTS) and PDC networks in Japan... and also CDMAone and CDMA2000 are available... so with the use of a dualmode (GSM/UMTS) phone it should work...

Japan adopt CDMA technology in their network since UK adopt GSM, and so far (as i know) there is no any mobile phone packed 2 technology in one single handset.

I guess u need a cdma phone...but u have to check with the japanese provider 1st if u wanna buy it cuz they might not register it for u onto network.easier would be to buy it there in Japan ...on a prepayed if they have it.No cdma/gsm i know. And pdc ....why buy one if asia is the only one using it? i am sure u can find a use for a cdma phone in western europe too when u get back.

Vodafone K.K. announced that starting in April, it will be shipping the Sharp V801SH. It’s a new 3G handset made specially for the Vodafone network. It’s aimed for use both in Japan and abroad. To accomplish roaming, the V801SH plays for both teams—both 3G and GSM. Here’s a quick wrap up of the features.
Dual band 3G / GSM
Integrated megapixel resolution digital camera
SD memory card slot (16MB card included)
Compatible with Vodafone live!
CD-quality ringtones
This phone will be sold only from Vodafone K.K. (Japan). However, since it’s dual-band, you will be able to travel to other markets without needing another phone. We’ll post more info when it ships in a few months

In my opinion, when you go over to jap, buy a phone and sim there, that means that you might save yourself a bit of money. Also, it means that you will have a decicated phone to use in Japan!
