Problem fixed, see further in thread

I decided to take off the flip of my 4 days old P900 (it is too bulky in my pocket with it), and I encountered a strange phenomenon: with the flip removed, the jog dial "in" (press) and "away" (cancel) do not work anymore. If I put back the flip, they work again, even if I just put gently the flip contacts on the pins without screwing it. The jog dial actions are not seen even in the diagnostic app.

I tried to upgrade the firmware, but the SE software tells me I have already the last version. Reboot does nothing.

Is it a known problem? I saw that one user posted about exactly the same problem in november without any answer on howards forums.

I do not think is is a mechanical problem as the jod dial works flawlessly with the flip connected. Smells like a firmware problem, or a buggy app, but which one?

Are you using 'Tracker'? That might explain it.

I had almost exactly the same problem, although with the flip removed it was only away that didn't work on the jog dial, I have never installed tracker. I prefer the P900 without the flip but I find losing back on the jog dial to be too frustrating, so I have to use it with the flip on.

Same problem on my P900, away doesn't work. Don't know if it's only with the flip off, I'll put the flip back on and check. I reported to the problem to the o2 shop that I got the phone from (free on £45/month deal) within 10 days of having the phone. They said they'd get me a new one. Waited another week and they said they couldn't get one and offered to repair it. I told them that I didn't want to be without the phone and within 28 days I'm entitled to a replacement, not a repair. So I'm waiting for them to get new stock in February and then I can swap my 2 month old P900 for a brand new one .

I also called customer services and told them about the problem and that it was effecting me using the phone properly. Since they couldn't get me a new phone either they dropped my line rental down to £15 even though I only had the phone for 3 weeks!!!

As I have filed a "support request" to sony ericsson, giving them the
URL of this topic, feel free to reply on this thread to detail your experience on this topic (jog dial "away" working or not, with the flip removed), with as much info as possible. maybe it will help them sort out the issue.

My phone is unlocked (bought without a contract), "system information" :

TA- DA!!! I FIXED IT !!!

The solution: you need to connect pins 1 & 2 of the flip contactor. When you remove the flip, you see on the phone 6 pins, let's number them:

4 5 6
1 2 3

Just connect electrically 1 & 2. I used a hard disk jumper,
which stays in place as the cover keeps it from getting out.

How I found this: I wanted to "emulate" what hapenned electrically when the flip was on. So I guess that to "sense" that the flip was on, even without keys pressed, some of the 6 contacts on the flips should be connected.
By testing them with a meter, I found that 1 & 2 and 4 & 5 where connected. So I just connected 4 &5 (didnt work), and 1&2 (worked!).

There should be no danger in this, as the flip naturally
connects 1&2. This hack will allow us to wait for a firmware solution... (uninstalling tracker did nothing)

PS: When I turned on the phone, before fixing it, there was actually some chance (1/3 ?) that the "in" worked, but never the "away".

regading the jog dial problem:

well, this has been pestering me also, but the connector obviously doesn't explain it.

i have been using the p900 withour the flip for like a month or so. no problems whatsoever; two day ago the jog dial started going wild. at first "only" inward failed, some hours later it didnt't work at all (random jumoing, back and forth, only sporadic reactions to keypresses).

i attached the flip again, didn't help. flip had power (lights were on) but didn't work either. removed it again, no effect.

then out of a sudden (sorry, no causal effect deductible) it worked again.

leaves me irritated, just wanted to feed the search engine if it comes up again...

hi guys,

i've recently experienced the same problem after removing the flip of my girlfriend's P900. The jogdial malfunctioned and when you put the flip back on, it works again.

The solution -- had my jogdial replaced at the Sony Ericsson Service Center. It now works fine. It only takes around 30 minutes to have the part replaced.

HTH.
