Well, not as I expected, only one and half day autonomy with 30 minutes of talk time in GH172. But anyway more that original battery :

I have two refurbished batteries for my GH172, the first pack was made by a friend of the forum and has a 1900 mAh Sanyo Eneloop cells, while the second one was refurbished with a 2100 mAh Tecxus cells.

While the pack with the Sanyo cells lasts 3 days of mixed usage (standby and short calls) the other one lasts for about a week. The only drawback of Tecxus cells are their diameter, which is a bit different than the ones of Sanyo cells and forces me to use a screwdriver in order to apply some pressure on the battery and unhook it from the phone.

From now on, I'll use only Sanyo cells since they fit better in the GH172 packs instead of the Tecxus ones.

That's very good. Do you use the standard charger or the multicharger? I use the multicharger and I notice the cells tend to get quite warm towards the end of a charging.
I am surprised to see you have more than double battery life with tecxus, could it be that the difference is so huge? I read some reviews before I purchased eneloops, but never seen such significant battery life feedback from tecxus users.

I also noticed the battery unlaces with a bit of a struggle out of the GH172, but very easily from 197 and 198.

GH197 Hotline battery life was a bit more than a day with 60 minutes of talk time.
Now I use the GH198.

These phones seem to be very well made, that after 22 years they work without a flaw(or with the same ones they had at the time). I am saying this in the light that some of the other models just die out of the sudden or have earpiece problems from the beginning and it's not due to liquid damage or any signs of misuse.

The part with the signal strength I this is a placebo. I believe that these phones were designed to a standard requirement of signal reception within a certain limits of course.
Older phones used less optimized electronics and having an antenna was a need, not a design. I don't think phones were over engineered beyond their required specifications.
O could be mistaking, but this now my opinion.

I use the Multi charger for the batteries, but I noticed that with the Tecxus cells, the charger stops working after it heats a bit, so I need to wait until it cools down, take off and reinsert the pack again, and it will charge until the green light appears, while the Eneloops charges until the end, without interruptions.

My usage is quite moderate, I receive few calls during the day so that might be the reason why my phone lasts so much. However, I won't refurbish batteries with Tecxus cells anymore, since their diameter is a bit bigger than the one of the Eneloop, requiring me to use a screwdriver to unhook the battery from the phone (unlike the pack with the Eneloops, that comes off easily by just pushing it, like it should do).

By owning four of them, I noticed that most GH172 seems to have problems at the ringer. Indeed, two of them (including the one I'm using as a daily mobile) have a very loud ringer, while the other ones have such a low ringtone volume that if you put them in your pocket you won't hear the ringtone if you're walking in the street. I noticed the same issue on a GH198 I received with the Multi charger, which I would like to sell for spares.

About the signal strenght, compared to the Alcatel 9109 HA, the GH172 has a more powerful signal, but it's less stable than the one of the Alcatel. While I can get easily 2/3 stable bars in signal with the 9109 HA, with the GH172 I usually get 3/4 points with the lowered antenna, and 4/5 points with the raised antenna, but the points change very frequently on the GH172, although I like the Ericsson for its being fast at finding network (unlike the Alcatel, which sometimes requires 10-20 attempts before finding network).

I want to ask a question to R290 Sat owners.
I've got mine yesterday, it's in great condition with battery and charger.
Battery was dead, 0.0 volts, i charged it for a few minutes yesterday and tested the phone.
What i noticed as a difference from all other Ericsson phones is that even the battery was completely discharged the phone started immediately as I plugged the charger and even more weird, with the phone off the charging indicator on the screen is as usual, but the LED light instead of being red, was blinking green(phone off), but the phone is charging ok, I left it all night. Do you noticed the same? In the manual is says it should be red during charge, but it's not. Only when I receive an SMS or the batt is low, that's when i saw it blinking RED only.
The phone is produced in first weeks of 2000 (i think 00w03), sw version R1A and SN 000026-0 (after TAC and country code). Tac is first series.
This means is the 26th phone or the 26th batch, or does not have any meaning?

Almost forgot, how do I enter the service menu, if applicable?

Thanks.

Hi guys, I got my hands on a Ericsson GH337. The phone itself is in very good conditions: no missing segment, light scratches etc. But unfortunately it has a problem: it doesn't connect to the network (despite there are three signal bars!), and if it does, it does it very rarely, and if I try to place a call, it will be quickly dropped.

I guess it's a malfuction of the transmitter unit. It's not a SIM problem since my 16K SIM card works fine on my old GA318 and on the GH172 and my other phones, only on the GH337 it gives troubles.

So I was thinking, since the GA318 is the "poor brother" of the 337, would it be possible to transplant the circuit board with the radio transceiver unit from the GA318 to the GH337? or it's not possible? I'd like to use that phone but unfortunately I can't due to this issue.

I'm not an expert, but at a local repair shop I was told it is not that easy that you just replace the bad component, radio has to be recalibrated and stuff, and the guy did not even bother to help me.

Yeah, I tried to disassemble the phone only to find out that the transceiver is soldered to the circuit board, I'll keep it for spares then in case I will find another GH337 someday.

On the bright side, I managed to take the courage in my hands and I've disassembled the other GH172 that didn't find network, and I've swapped the transceiver (which is a separate circuit board plugged into a socket located on the mainboard of the phone) from a "junk" phone and it works amazingly now. I also replaced the body and the keypad of my "main" GH172, cleaned the interior (which made me find out that I had TWO LIVING SPIDERS into the phone... Yuck!) and removed the dust from the display. It looks way better now, plus I have two working phones, the other two are only for spares since they have problems at the ringer.

However, I wonder if it's possible to find out the year and month of production of the phone. I've looked at the chips and most of them have date codes from 1990 to 1992, so I guess that my GH172 was made around 1992, since these are the only dates I've foundo on the chips.
