Are you sure this is 256 colors? It looks like 16 to me...
When you are going to convert the image, you should first size it to fit on the screen (T68), then change the image mode to "indexed". When you choose indexed, a palette dialog-box pops up. Then, just make sure it's gonna index to 256 colors, load the pallete, use the apropriate dithering and press OK. When you've done that, you will be able to save to GIF at once. If you want to save to JPEG, you might have to switch the image mode back to RGB first.

Can you not just resize it them rate it as a gif, like wrath says? Thats what I've been doing for ages and it comes out fine most of the time. I don't even bother with the pallete.

Try this:
1. Resize the image to correct size (to fit on T68 screen)
2. Choose "Indexed" image mode
3. In the dialog box, load the palette (make sure it's a 256 color palette, not 16 color) You will find it here
4. Leave all the other settings as they are.
5. Press OK, the image should now be converted to 256 color indexed.
If you want the image as gif, simply save it as GIF (non-interlaced)
If you want the image as JPEG:
1. Switch the image back to RGB mode
2. Don't do any more changes
3. Save as JPG (not optimized, baseline)

If this doesn't work, let me know what program/version you are using.
If I had all the answers, I wouldn't have any questions.

Send me the origianal, I'll take a look at it.
I use photoshop 7, don't remember the features in photoshop 4
Does the image become like this (distorted) before or after you save?
Tell me which step the image becomes distorted...

The pic on the first page is already distorted, nothing can be done to fix it.

Since the distortion happens as soon as you load the palette, it seems to me that you are trying to use a 16 color palette. You need to use a 256 color palette. Have you tried using the palette I referred to in my post above? I have personally used that palette without problems.

I don't really remember the features in photoshop 4, perhaps you need to specify the color depth for indexed mode somewhere?
Have you tried doing this with other images? Do you get the same result?
I am quite certain that in your case, for some reason, photoshop converts the image to 16 colors instead of 256.

...maybe you can get a hold of a newer photoshop version?
