Anyone have one?
I bought a 10GB model a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it. 500 'classic' songs in the palm of my hand -- best two hundred and fifty quid I ever spent Interested in talking to other iPod users about tips and tricks... if they have any.
Does anyone know where I could get a protective case for it, as the screen and casing are getting a lot of surface marks and wear-and-tear?

You won't be happy to see this but; http://www.iriver.com/product/info.asp?p_group=iHP%20Series&p_name=iHP-100
I think it is better than the iPod; it's firmware upgradable (don't know if iPod is), it has built in radio, USB 2.0, 8 line graphic LCD display, 16 hours of playback, etc. etc...
To compare it with iPod's (The black part has a flash movie):

I've had my 10gb generation 2 iPod for almost a year now. Probably one of the best things I've ever bought!
I've got about 1200 songs on it at the moment. When Apple released the third generation iPods and the v1.3 Firmware update for mine, I re-ripped all the CDs I own into AAC format, which means I can fit more music on it at better quality than MP3.
That iRiver thing is ok... but a blatant iPod rip-off. To me it looks tacky, PC-like and over-complicated. It doesn't play AAC files either which are the future format of choice for me. I much prefer the simplicity and design of the iPod. It's also not Mac compatible! |

The iPod is firmware upgradable, you can even do this by yourself without special equipment! T610-Girl, is your iPod 2nd generation? I liked the \"old\" design better, but those newer ones are better.

My iPod is the new, new, new version- so I guess that makes it 3rd generation
Bit of a battle to get hold of one though. I had a lucky break Right place, right time. They're out of stock everywhere with back lists as long as your arm. |

Two iPod stories appeared in the press today, funnily enough:
First, the shock news in The Sun that Geri Halliwell might be the only celebrity without an iPod!!
Secondly, after Australia last week, now the UK can't keep up with demand for the iPod...
Looks like you were very lucky to get yours T610-Girl!! |

I've got one that plays audio, video, games, keeps contacts, calendar, appointments, alarm, makes calls, surfs the net, takes pictures, draws, calculates, downloadable dictionary, ebooks and applications...
It is called the SonyEricsson P800.
Thank you, thank you... you may stop the applause right now... |

But you're missing the point... the iPod is a just a digital MUSIC player, the best digital music player... why would you want a colour screen on a music player? It's purely for selecting tracks from.
If they were to bring out a new product that plays videos, then a colour screen would be a must. But that would be a different product altogether. Plus, who really wants to squint at a 2 inch screen to watch videos? It would have to be a fair bit larger than the iPod and the iPod is really tiny - one of its main selling points.
And the last time I looked at the P800 it didn't have a 10, 15 or 30gb hard drive in it (although how cool would that be if it did!!!???) so can only store a fraction of the number of audio files that the iPod can... |

JoolsG3, even if the ipod is only a music player I bet you anything they will bring out a colour version sometime and of course this is a colourful world and its my choice these days to have all my gadgets colour. Even my multi function remote control has a colour screen.

@JoolsG3
It is Mac compatible. You can download the program at the download section.
@MaThIbUs
You don't need any special equipment to upgrade iHP-100, too.
The USB cable given with it to download MP3's do the job.
Even the iMP series (Mp3, Wma, Asf, CD-DA player) are firmware upgradable. You download the new firmware from the internet, write it to a cd and then play the CD in the discman. I bought a ChromeX iMP-350 series CDP because it was one of the cheapest here (100€) which has an OggPlayer firmware coming... The OggPlayer firmware will also be released for iHP series. They are working for it...

I'm not sure that the iPod would benefit from a colour screen. Sure it would look cool, but battery life would suffer and the interface would no doubt be slower. Then, to get better battery life back up they'd have to put a bigger battery in. The last iPod update actually decreased its size by another few millimetres by using a smaller (shorter life) battery. So it appears Apple are concentrating more on size at the moment.
Plus, its not as if they haven't had the opportunity to add a colour screen already - but so far they haven't, which suggests its not a priority.
I think you should get one now, masseur! If it does what you want now, buy one. As I've read on here many times, you'd never buy anything if you're always waiting for the next new version!! And my personal opinion is that you'll be waiting a long time for a colour iPod - however, I would like to proved wrong!! |
