Navi-wheel thumb control on japanese SE phones? |

On the new Japanese SE models A1301s and A1101 and the Sony/Clie PEG-KC50, there appears to be a thumb wheel for controlling up/down scrolling.
Can anyone please verify this?
I always thought the Navi-wheel found on the Nokia 7110 was a great idea, and I wondered why later phones never featured something similar.
On either side of the scroll wheel, it looks like there are small buttons for right/left navigation. Very interesting implementation of perhaps a great user interface!

Actually, that thumb wheel is a Sony thing. It's called the Jog-Dial It was & is in all Sony products... long before the Navi-wheel of Nokia.
Sony always had it. The newer ones are 5-way. The reason Nokia never used it again was that they couldn't make it reliable. It would start acting up after just a few months of heavy use. So they scrapped it.
AFAIK, only the P800 has the Jog-Dial...apart from the Japan-only models of |

Yes, I remember using jog dial controls on Sony 3/4-inch videotape machines back in the 80's. And I am aware of the jog dial wheel on the side of the P800 - which is a great feature.
But I was referring to that curious looking bar right where a joystick or thumpad would nornally be. You can see the pictures in these other threads:

So is that a nice fat thumb-wheel control above the keypad, or something completely different?

Oh, that... I think it's still called a Jog-Dial... you see the same thing on the Sony Vaio's... I don't think it's 5-way though... it's just a regular 3-way dial. |

A 3-way dial plus the softkey buttons on either side of the dial. I suppose the buttons could be used for horizontal navigation, yes/no, etc.
I like the joystick on the T68 series, but I think a well-made jog dial fashioned in the spirit of the Nokia 7110 Navi-roller would be a nice option, if not a definite improvement. |

i remember having a Nokia 7110 before...that "scroll" was so useful...especially when texting and using the same button ex. "HIHIHI"...very easy
I also had a Sony cmd-J5 before which uses the Jog Dial..same concept but the position is kind awkward especially when youre right handed |
