The moving of the sound slits to the very top and bottom seem like another admission that the Z3 designs were wrong.

Thing is - Z3 has the best front facing speakers out of all Xperias up to date.

The next trio (compact, main, premium) design base and hardware base should be the following if they care for criticism:
smaller top and bottom bezel
thick device, around 9mm i guess considering the internals and the small bezel
move the rear camera to around the top middle if must
full metal or metal back, but really, anything but glass for a change, and if glass it is then much more crack and scratch resistant
place the speakers in the front of each bezel unlike z2 and z5
decrease the ip rating for higher quality speakers and better heat dissipation.
ois
usb type c
fast charger included in the box

No brainer.

@Ricky D
Afaic, speakers quality (hardware)>design.

... have the 2013 original Xperia Z (C6603) on a sim only and have recently received the final software update: 5.1.1. That is just over 2 and a half years worth of updates and consists of 4 new Android versions. As, to put it lightly, Sony Mobile is somewhat washed up on the rocks, at moment (so to speak); do you think I should wait and see if Sony recovers and get the Z6, or get another brand e.g a Nexus phone, where I might get more guaranteed software supports in terms of updates etc.?

Any suggestions on this?

Also, not sure what XR rating the Z5+ or Z5 Ultra are, but how would you factor that into your answer to my above question if either are XR4 rumours and above?

Just trying to figure out whether I'll still get a decent number of updates of new Android versions, or if it's best to move to another OEM if Sony may not be around for much longer in the mobile market...

Well, My thoughts are as follows,

1. I don't think Sony will quit mobile, it may shrink but they won't quit it. Even they do, you'll have 2 year support (look at vaio)

2. I believe we'll see a Z5+ and Z5 Tablet and Z5 Ultra (alas!) at MWC.

3. If I were you I would try to get the Z5 Premium if your budget is ok and not looking for a 6.44 behemoth like me.

So it is up to you. But jumping from Sony to another android oem will make you sad.

they just need to find a way to be profitable, thats all they need and keep the boat floating, doesn't need to sell 1 trillion phones. It was also the same case with PS3 when it was first launched.

I also hope for Z5+ Compact (Or Premium Compact, whatever) with FHD display and 4GB of RAM. That would be a killer.

PS. It's likely that Z6 may get SD820 SoC manufactured in 10nm process. Why? Because Samsung should be ready for mass production in H2 2016 and rumor says that they'll just switch for SD820 as well.

So if Sony do shrink and, like you said, still provide 2 years of support, should I wait for the Z6 for the Snapdragon 820 chip or will the Z5+ or Ultra have it?? Either way, that's the chipset I want my next phone to have. I worry about having a screen that's more than 5.5 inches as I believe that may be unmanageable and too big. For context, I have the original Z. I think you've re-assured me regarding getting a decent amount of support (new Android versions, update-wise). I'm just wondering whether the first 820 chip Sony phone will definitely be *before* IFA 2016. I am too impatient to wait that long, but could theoretically just get the phone off carrier and unlocked once released as I am on SIM only. Do you think the Z5+ (if it does have an 820) is XR4 and above roumour-wise? Am I just better off waiting for the Z6 which is almost guaranteed to have it? Do most of you guys see Sony still providing the same level of software support even if they do shrink - not quit the mobile sector?

Well leaksfly in weibo (very very credible) stated clearly that Z5 Ultra will have SD820. So if Z5+ also exists, they will upgrade the chipset and ram in order to complement + variant. They can't upgrade the camera and unlikely display so they only have chipset and ram. So I would wait for March to take a look at Sony offerings. Only itch is Z5+ might not be released globally.

I completely trust Sony for software support whether they shrink/quit. It's a Japanese thing. Kind of like their business ethics.

For the rating, I don't know a lot about Z5+. But it is %80 probable that a Z5 Ultra exists.

If you have time, I would say wait for IFA if no Z5+ because new design language is coming.

@penguino
Yeah the miku edition was talked about a while ago, but I don't think Sony will release a new compact just yet. Anyways it would be a killer if they did.

DxOMark is a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously. One of many examples, Nokia 808 PureView is almost last in this comparison while it wins hands down with all mentioned phones (It's hard to beat 1/1,2" sensor )
