A sensible move. But will it make it easier for them to also spin off their mobile operations?

The problem with US carriers is that they require a lot of changes to the rom, and after that they need to verify it also, which take a lot of resources and time...
Apple now controls their phone, because carriers needs them, so Apple is the one who decide what's there and what's not...
Android is different, some players are large in the market, they have some control but not that much...
I think Google should stand here, as like what HTC said that they can do the security updates but not with the carrier versions... Google must work out a solution for this, might work also with the FCC so that they limit and control how much mod. the carrier can request and do in the phones specially regarding the security side...
Google did a very good job separating core services and apps from the rom so these can be updated separately without the need to update the whole thing, but they need to do more to be able to introduce small updates the to the core, system & services without affecting the rest... and this will need a lot of work to separate things up... by this method, they can release security updates directly to Android with little to no changes to the front-end, making the possibility to update phones directly without the need for carrier approval, or even directly push the updates without the need for the manufacturer to push it...
Carriers want their garbage apps in the rom, that's it. They never make any changes that benefit the final user, never. They spend very few resources on it. Same applies to Canadian telcos. My 5.1.1 bell rom is the same as the US generic rom, bit by bit, yet people have to wait 2-3 extra weeks for bell to release it to UNLOCKED devices that were sold via a Sony store. So no, it's a broken model and google is not willing to fix it.
Apple is different, so is Microsoft with Windows 10 Mobile, which does not command the same market share, yet MS are making sure carriers have nothing to do with updates. So surely, it's Google's fault and considering they are an advertisement agency rather than a software company, it's anything but expected. Everything they do - they never finish, and even when they finish it - it's broken beyond repair. Repeat.
Don't get me started on security. Google and security never go together in one sentence anymore. It is the most unsecure OS right now and the fragmentation reflects the rotten nature of Google's approach that is hopefully going to bite them in the ass very soon. Stagefright/2.X is only the beginning.
As of core apps separating, the only reason for that is google's desire to have more and more core google apps in your phone. And it is another reason for companies like samsung to slowly move away from this venom, things like Tizen (which is progressing very fast and is now everywhere, from Samsung TVs to watches and home appliances, IoT etc) will be the OS of choice for samsung going forward. As we all know, in the lagdroid world - samsung is the only thing that matters.
Unfortunately for Sony, they are stuck in bed with scroogle (speaking of wrong wrong choices very soon after the next quarterly call) and it's going to be a painful final years for several of their divisions including mobile and TVs.

If you have thé 16 gig version there is no overheating problem. After 5 minutes is your memory full.

I thought you only have about 8G to begin with after OS and other feature apps settled. that's alot less than 16GB to record |

His point is that with such low storage available, there will be not enough time to start observing any heat issues as the memory will be over way before starting to over heat...

It's easy to quote only defective units and repeat some videos with prototypes.
You should open a blog to write about your hate on Sony.
99% of your words are complains about a thing that you could avoid, the 1% left is only bullsh*t.
I really can't understand what the hell are you doing in this topic.

Sony might exits the smartphone business. The recent news about Sony to spin off its Image Sensor Business as a newcCompany would support that rumor.
“We will continue with the business as long as we are on track with the scenario of breaking even next year onwards … Otherwise, we haven’t eliminated the consideration of alternative options.” – Sony Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai

Sony really need to price their phones under the competition, I know they want to be seen as "Premium" and all, but Sony need to regain customers and improve brand perception. For many the Xperia brand isn't as attractive as say the Galaxy brand for example.
I for one will be waiting to see If their are any price drops soon for the Z5.
And increase availability.
