Z3 if fairly thin and has one of the biggest sensors on the mobile market. And it doesn't change the fact that it takes mediocre pictures. |

@penguino, it's related to both sensor size and type of lens, some lenses has 4 - 6 elements, while more complicated it's also larger... and going to a more complicated designs also ( like OIS ) will require larger lens assembly also.
having a large sensor with very thin design will require a wide angle lens and other lens also to fix the distortion of wide angle lens.. which adds more lens also
Sony did impressive engineering with Z series to have such sensor on thin device, and going thinner and thinner is more challenging..
If you remember before the camera was behind the screen, now Sony moved it out duo to the fact that the screen takes thickness too, moving the camera outside the back of the screen will allow having larger sensor on the same thickness, or same sensor with thinner profile...

or go back to arch design, top and bottom can be thicker and middle part of the body can be ultra thin. That way they can put in bigger lense and stack stuffs at the bottom. This can probably shrink down the top and bottom bezels. Xperia V still has the classiest design of all the xperia IMO, just need to refresh.

I have to say, the Xperia V is definitely a looker! They just need to refresh the design and replaced those plastic with metal and glass. |

I think so too. The XV was one of my favourite ever phones, I think most people on here preferred it to the XT. It just seemed to tick all the boxes and gave way to the Z1 compact.
Regarding thickness, I really don't mind extra thickness. A lot of people use cases and and extra mm added to the thickness probably gives us useful extra battery life (although you know what some reviewers are like, they'd call any Xperia over 8 mm chunky take away a star!)
If Sony is going all out at the premium end then I'd expect to see more metal in their future designs. Their high end smartphones are just beautiful.

I prefer seeing them using this new Tube design rather than reusing the arc. The arc language is really nice, but they are trying to incorporate the Fingerprint scanner to the Power Button.
It would make much more sense to keep the thickness of the middle body the same (more space for the scanner) rather than trim down its thickness for the Arc design
Id love to see the final Tube design of the "Z5" - hopefully, they can get better naming system for their flagship trios (compact, normal size and phablet)

Kinda Off-Topic
Same device, but 2 different camera sensors used. Samsung's Isocell vs Sony's IMX240.
Winner: Sony Sensor

Conclusion: Sony sucks in camera software department.

That much has always been clear Johnny.
As for the "arc" design. Yeah it was pretty at the time, but its horribly inefficient in terms of space usage. That concave arc basically carves out a region which could be enlarged to fit in a larger battery. A larger battery to me, is more important than the pointless nostalgia towards the "arc" design.
That tube concept is cool. It'd just be bad with glass. Ultra fragile.

The Funny sad fact it is
Any way, I don't think bringing an old design is a good move from Sony to a flagship, maybe a mid ranger okay, but Sony can make brilliant designs, we have Arc, S, OB designs as examples...
so I believe the will do it again...

Fact: Sony camera modules and sensors shine when used by other OEMs

It's basically M4 Aqua specs with larger display and a flash for the front camera and they've got rid of any IP rating but it'll only cost approx £230 sim free which isn't bad at all.
I'm so happy 'cause today I've found my friends ... They're in my head

Pretty good specs overall. I like it a lot. 1080p IPS screen and a decent mediatek SOC. Funny how all these ODM designs has good bezel to phone ratio |
