Indeed, you don't understand it. All phones with 4K you video recording capability usually has a 5-minute limit. The Z3 Compact made it to almost 6 min with Btekt, and recombu even claims it did 10 min of recording before shuting down. Of course it got warm, all the other phones do. It's an overblown issue with the Z2 BEFORE that they had already fixed.

I want to know if the pause and resume features in video recording can solve the 4K overheating problem.

It's not just an overblown issue. I am a die hard sony fan but try Google searching 4k overheat and the z2 will appear on many different pages. This issue brings the reputation of the company down.

Yeah why is SONY targeted for the 4k over heating? Don't the 600D/7D Canon DSLR's also over heat!?Almost all compact devices over heat with 4k Recording..even GoPro does i believe.I guess SONY better set a 5min limited video recording.

To anyone who said Samsung galaxy alpha has faster processor, I'm looking at you king james
The conclusion is, Z3C have better quality and louder stereo speakers, better battery, better performance, better camera and waterproof. Alpha only wins at screen

About the 4K, unless you are recording video to film a movie, I don't see the hype. My computer only supports 1366x768 lol
I would stick to 1080p is more than enough. 4K is just to make all these brands look good on paper but at the end, no benefits for the users whatsoever. What I'm trying to say is the 4K technology is not mature enough to be pushed in all modern phones like this.
So I don't blame the pooor little Z3c, probably trying as much as the processor allows.

The technology has not matured yet. That's why.

From http://www.hardwarezone.com.m[....]4k-video-recording-smartphones

The biggest limitation of recording in 4K affects every smartphone: none of them can record in 4K for more than five minutes at a time. The reason behind this is due to how the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800/801 chip processes 4K video data. Both Snapdragon 800/801 chips utilize software-based HVEC (H.265) encoding/decoding, rather than a hardware-based solution like those found in dedicated 4K video cameras. This means that all the heavy lifting while recording videos has to be done by the CPU itself, which puts them under heavy load. In turn, this leads to the processor overheating within a few minutes of use, resulting in the phone shutting down the camera app to prevent the CPU from frying itself.

Basically, once Qualcomm releases a chip with HW based H.265 encoding/decoding, the issue should reduce.

But for now all 4k videos are recorded using h.264 so the point about software h.265 is invalid.
AFAIK, only new mirrorless camera from samsung (NX1) uses h.265 to record movies.

Would be nice to get hardware encoding/decoding for 4k, so probably ideal to wait for 810. In the meantime, waiting for sony to release the new smaller alphas with 4k

Even so, encoding 4k is way more demanding than say encoding a 1080p signal. So in either way, clearly more heat is generated by the chip. That's what we have with current gen HW (will of course improve with future chip revisions).
