Yeah, but point is, it's noticeably better with the Z2, right?
Way less or even not at all visible at the Z2 (despite being less sharp than Z1).
Or have I something with my eyesight? ^^

Btw:
Just played around a little bit with some photo editor, it seems like the "white artifacts" on the Z1 shots appear if you oversharpen the picture. I could enhance the sharpness of the Z2's pics without! these artifacts. I can share some examples tomorrow.

Why care so much about those charts if the Z2 delivers better photos in actual tests

Xactly. Why don't you guys concentrate on PICS QUALITY,
not random detail obsession?

^because charts show ACTUAL sensor quality. Some people can take good quality photos, some don't. You can't really compare a good photo made with S5 against a bad photo shot with Z2, and vice versa. But no matter what, charts shots are always the same, made under same conditions that require practically no skills at all, so this is the best way to tell which camera is simply better. It's that easy.

Met my buddy who has a S5 for himself and a Z1 in the family. Looking at the Z2 he said "wow..awesome screen" "the Z1 was great but dint have a great screen"

and after using his S5 what i felt is Z2 has a great screen and definitely suits my taste but definitely not as bright as S5..which is a shame.

^^Yes, admad said it, spot on!

So here are some results of *enhancesomepicturesfromphonearenabecauseImbored*
(beware, this is nothing scientific, I'm not a professional, done with GIMP, based on PhoneArena studio comparison tool, all max resolutions)

1. What are these white dots on the Z1's pics, and why don't they appear on the Z2's pics? (Or how to transform Z2 to Z1)

-> As a test I simply sharpened the image from Z2 too much, as a result white dots appear much like on the Z1.

2. Why does the Z1's pic appear to be sharper or why looks the Z2 image so soft?

-> Z2 seemed to sharpen less, but therefore looks too soft. After sharpening Z2's image it looks very good imho. S5 as comparison can't resolve as much detail as Z2 (sharpened)!

3. What bugs me, Z1 appears to have the higher resolution in the middle, but gets very soft in the edges, where the Z2 looks better in the edges.

Conclusion:
I don't really see anything fundamental wrong with the images from the Z2 on Phonearena.
It seems that Sonys approach on the Z2 is less sharpening, but that is a fault in my opinion. Because if you sharp the Z2's images not to harsh, they resolve very much detail and don't look soft!

Why I did this?
-> I was bored and I do weird things when I'm bored

But seriosly, I think the Z2 has a very capable camera, it's again Sony either processes the image too much or too less (haha). I think it's very easy to fix software, that's way I see no major problem in the Z2's images.

Sure enough that when it comes to charts we all want images to look as sharp as possible but in actual scenes, I rather have softer images that look natural than an oversharpened image that looks like clay when zoomed. I think Sony should also have manual controls for sharpening so as to satisfy those customers that like they're pictures to look more sharpened.

In the above pictures, honestly I don't think we need more sharpening there. I think that the sharpening is sufficient sometimes but in other conditions it is not. Sony's approach is definitely different than Samsung's. It seems to me that Samsung's software always want to look good on "chart" conditions while Sony and Nokia is more mature in that they value natural-looking pictures than impressing people based on chart performance.

^ that's the problem. based on the gsmarena and phonearena ISO chart i was complaining about, you can see how the z2 was overdoing (or wrongly doing?) the sharpening. those white artifacts are the result of sharpening. that's why it baffles me why in the other charts the z2 has soft images while in others there are obvious efforts (and failures) to sharpen the images.

gsmarena is essentially saying that the superior auto mode is the best way to get the best quality shots out of the z2 while almost everyone here is suggesting manual controls.

well, we can't drag this issue any longer. what is clear is that the z2 camera module is very much capable and we can safely say that, overall, the z2 camera is better than s5's despite the phonearena and gsmarena chart comparisons. that's my only concern. the soyacincau link posted above also shows how software updates made the z1 just as good or even better than the s5. just look at the color accuracy and sharpness (no random blurring as gsmarena's samples show).
