these review sites never agree on everything. looks like they have different readers they're trying to please.

while nokias look great on gsmarena, we've seen several times when the lumias (not 1020 and 808) performed poorly. in the russian sites for example, the colors of the 1520 are severely off.

here, you can clearly see that the z2 produces clean lines even at the maximum resolution.

gsmarena always finds (creates?) faults in xperias. the xperia z was tested during a very cloud day, producing murky shots. the z1 enjoyed some bright sunlight but the right side was blurring (something not seen in the shots taken by phonearena). with the z2, the outdoor shots were again taken during a cloudy day. they had more than 5 days to choose a better day to take shots but they chose to have it on a cloudy day.

compare that to galaxy shots. they're always on a sunny day with blue skies and only some clouds to the sides.

Thing is you didn't quote what was under those pictures on Digital Versus:-

how come we weren't able to find these:

z2 vs pv 808
http://translate.google.com/t[....]n-wykonuje-lepsze-zdjecie.aspx

z2 vs s5 vs 808
http://translate.googleuserco[....]rhiFl-Ca_xBKD4dcRFW3xThVy55hZQ

impressive z2 i think
great colors, sharpness, and brightness
in some instances, i thought they mislabeled the z2 shots as s5's (because of the blur i used to associate with the z2)

i'm just bothered by these reviewers' inconsistency. at some points, they award the best photo to the pureview for the "natural" color reproduction and brightness but in some cases, they consider 808's output as the best photo again because of the more brilliant and punchy colors. natural or punchy colors? which makes a photo better?

At last they mention

"Xperia Z2 has a very advanced camera with impressive performance and packed with a multitude of marketing techniques from Sony. In automatic mode, it works well, but thanks to the many regulations available in manual mode will allow an informed user to perform even better pictures. "

Z2 does heat up with 3G. Much more than my XS anyway. Also is it just me or is the charging a bit slow?
Anyway, there is a FW update waiting ,will do that tonight and see if it changes anything.

The charging may seem slower than the Xperia S but remember the Z2's battery is almost twice the capacity so I think That may have something to do with it. I noticed a similar thing moving from the Z to the Z1.

Got my Z2 yesterday, have recharged it, yes it takes a bit long time. Exactly 3h20m full charging! It's not a 3200mAh battery inside, according to the servicemenu it has a 3400mAh battery...

Need to recharge again, have played a lot, battery is the best of all sony devices, no doubt about it. Have reached one day with about 7h display on time with heavy using.

Yes, my Z2 also heat up fast in some situations.

What I like so far +++
- Building quality
- Display, the best of Sony
- Amazing Headset
- Camera
- Stereoloudspeaker
- Notification LED
- Can use with Pencil
- Less dust on screen and back, cause no foil finaly

Dont like ---
- lacks a bit on quality, it has some gaps between glas and the frames in the corners, it can goes water and dust inside... I won't try watertest
- led flash is a shame for such highend device
- display get dirty fast, you see lot of fingerprints, gorilla glass never get so dirty
- volume rocker is too small and to close to the powerbutton
- (long charging time)
- (heat up)

^ great to see a new z2 owner here
those things you don't like are not alarming at all although i would suggest you really test the water resistance even with those gaps. that way you can quickly have a replacement unit if those gaps compromise the IP rating

please share some photos

------

anyway, phonearena has a chart shot with the 20MP resolution

http://www.phonearena.com/pho[....]alaxy-S5/phones/8323,8202?st=2

it has those white artifacts

i managed to obtain information about the photos being compared:

for the S5:
resolution: 3984x2988 (strange... i thought this should be a 16MP photo as labeled)
file size: 3.36 MB (unusually small for a supposedly 16MP galaxy photo)

camera model: SM-G900F
f-stop: f/2.2
exposure time: 1/278 sec. (longer than the z2's. can we manually set it on the s5?)
ISO: ISO-40
exposure bias: 0 step
focal length: 5 mm
max aperture: 2.28
metering mode: center weighted average
flash: no flash
35mm focal length: 31

for the z2:
resolution: 5248x3936 (full 20.66 MP)
file size: 7.54 MB

camera model: D6503
f stop: f/2
exposure time: 1/640 sec. (shorter than that of s5's. can we manually set exposure time on the z2)
ISO speed: ISO-50
exposure bias: 0 step
focal length: 5 mm
metering mode: center weighted average
flash: no flash, compulsory

those who understand technical details in photography, please explain how these differences matter or if there is a possibility that settings were intentionally set in that way to make one device appear better.

after those links i posted about z2 vs 808 vs s5, i'm doubting these ugly photos supposedly from z2 even more.
is there really an attempt to make z2 look worse than it actually is?

yeah, i know this sounds patetic but i really want to know how on earth could dxomark hail z2 as having the best camera so far considering that we are seeing all these "flaws." i know dxomark only tested the 8MP photos but even the 8MP photos from phonearena and gsmarena are not as sharp as the iphone 5s's, the galaxy s4's, and galaxy note 2's (devices that rank lower on dxomark's list).

- the photographic test charts are usually in a 4:3 format, therefore the picture of native 16:9 cameras (S5, HTC One) gets cropped, thus less resolution and smaller filesize

- we can't set exposure time, neither on the S5 or the Z2 (a shame)

- "easiest" way to make a picture look bad would be turn the ISO up, which did not happen, and I don't think they tried to make it look bad!

- Only thing I can think of (explaining the discrepancy between phonearena/gsmarena and dxomark) would be different hardware quality as a result of poor quality control and/or low yield rates/difficult production of the sensor or optics itself! (camera lottery, haha...)

The Z2 doesn't really have these white artifacts the Z1 had. The Z2 only lacks sharpness and a more aggressive noise reduction.
The noise pattern on the Z2 is indeed very good, the Z1 in comparison looks like a mess.
(This is all based on the phonearena comparison tool!)

also had those answers in my mind. just wanted somebody to write them down / confirm.
just can't come up with an explanation on those (apparently) sharpening artifacts in the 20 MP photos.

the phonearena z1 and z2 chart photos look almost the same to me. i even think z1 is better there (a bit sharper).

so y'all don't expect the z2 to win any blind comparisons at phonearena or elsewhere
it will be very unlikely for them to come up with results like the ones in here: http://translate.googleuserco[....]rhiFl-Ca_xBKD4dcRFW3xThVy55hZQ

basically, what phonearena and gsmarena are saying is that you'll get better photos with the Superior Auto setting — the exact opposite to what many of us here are saying.

Look closely, for example:

The blacks on the Z1 almost look grey, just because of these white dots/artifacts. To me it looks like some weird noise (noise is a result of readout errors from the sensor, so this would make sense).

The blue part right looks more blue on the Z2, again because of the white artifacts. But you can see them easier on the first image with the black objects.

But you're right, Z1 looks/is definitely sharper!
I'll try and enhance the Z2 image later (you can sharpen images afterwards, but can't get rid of these white dots/artifacts).
