Why not ? They don't have to worry about paying patent licensing to themselves, and they can make some money in the low end in the meantime.

This seems like a complete android fork, just like what amazon did with the kindle, so google will have almost no control over it. They have their won app store, just like amazon.

I think you're both confused.

Microsoft now owns the name Lumia, and the MS Windows Phone hardware division from Nokia sold and paid for! This does NOT stop Nokia to stuggle using a new OS ... Android. And let's not kid ourselves here. MS also owns the majority of they lucrative patents as well. Take a good read of their press release and ponder for a moment what MS REALLY stole from the cookie Jar.

Nokia without such patents really is in more trouble in my mind than BlackBerry.

Yes, it does. Nokia are not "allowed" to produce their own smartphones until 2016 if I remember correctly.

edit

Here you go: http://press.nokia.com/2013/0[....]-billion-all-cash-transaction/

Nokia can't use the Nokia name on any phones for 30 months, which is December 31, 2015

"Upon the closing of the transaction, Nokia would be restricted from licensing the Nokia brand for use in connection with mobile device sales for 30 months and from using the Nokia brand on Nokia's own mobile devices until December 31, 2015."

This technically puts them out of contention. They could produce another phone in 2016 but they don't have the infrastructure to do so.. they might order one from Compal or whatever, but it won't be the same.

I'm not suprised much by this - real or fake.
I think personally that Nokia would have more succes with Android istead of WP but either way, any phones from Nokia are good.
And I don't think there will be more phones until 2016 (at least with a Nokia brand on them...)

^ If they were to oblige their contract with Microsoft, no.. there won't be any Nokia branded smartphones.

The asha line will continue to use the Nokia brand, and whatever this forked android is might use it as well, depending on how Microsoft wants to play this. I am sure that they knew about it during the negotiations.

Microsoft owns pretty much everything related to producing, designing, distributing, and licensing any of those phones/devices .. the deal should close sometime this quarter.

For Nokia to return in 2016 with their own smartphone will be extremely difficult and highly unlikely, unless they buy Jolla or some other manufacturer. I am not saying that its impossible, just that its not going to be easy.

^ regarding the partial statement in bold ... why does EVERYONE, or sorry so many ppl state that?! Where is the research or facts or even a remote chance of a proper rebuttal to back that up?

Without such thoughts or research to back that up you're just repeating verbatim what you've heard or read, basically being a parrot (no insult intended here). This is something NONE of the 'old-gaurd' here on Esato would do when Windows Smartphone, S60, or UIQ was around; it seems to be a recent trend.

Case in Point

FACT: HTC the largest OEM until Huwae or Foxconn, which used to make windows smartphones for Vodafone, Orange, TIM and T-Mobile UK, went on to be a direct manufacturer using their own brand. They did fantastic for years, even the first 3yrs for Android ... then beginning of 2013 LOST BILLIONS of dollars and they ONLY make Android phones. They have a HUGE acceptance by carriers the globe over compared to BlackBerry and their in just as bad financial times as BlackBerry. They've sold just over twice (5.4 million) HTC One's compared to BB Z10's (3.56 million) - those numbers are estimates and pretty close not exaggerated.

That is just ONE fact I've given you the intelligently rebuttals against that 'parrot' like statement.

Because WP is still lagging behind Android and iOS and it's using stuff from both of them to polish itself up and make more users interested.

Whenever you get a chance look at the agreement I posted a bit earlier in the thread.. its all in there. Microsoft bought the Asha line, where they can use the Nokia name, they also bought the devices and services part of Nokia, but they can't use the Nokia name for smartphones, at least not for any smartphone in development AFTER the deal finalizes which is yet to happen.

Nokia kept their name, but they CAN NOT use on any smartphones for 30 months.

Considering how strong Samsung are in the android realm, there is really no point in trying to compete against them. Nokia might've had a chance with android in the short term, but not long term. If not Microsoft.. Google would've bought them eventually.

What they are trying to do with this Normandy headset is kind of clever.. I expect Samsung and Sony to fork android as well at some point in time.. it makes no sense to slave to google if you don't have to.

I don't think its fake... the most extreme scenario is Microsoft blocking it once they come in, but I highly doubt that. They probably knew about it while the negotiations were going on, and my guess is that they will probably keep the project going since they can promote their WP by making it look like it..

If they "Fork" it properly you won't even be able to tell that its android...
