In case you missed, XPERIA never made money for Sony. And even for Q2 Xperia remains the only business in RED. Even the TV business is in black now.

Oh my mistake.

I was under the impression that it was the Vaio business which was lumped together with the Smartphone business, that put it in the red. If that's incorrect, then I apologise. If you have any financial records to set things straight, it would be appreciated.

I don't mean to be rude, if that's how I come across by the way.

@ Ramu In Sony's FY14 (year to March 14) full year financial report's presentation slides it's clearly stated that SMC had been profitable in FY14. In today's results also it's stated that this time last year they made 12.6 billion yen in operating profit. I guess you got over-emotional and didn't see the facts.

@MartenR

That was last year. Last year was pretty decent for Sony and the shipments were also higher.

Let's look at Data released today. Guess you can easily what part of Sony electronics lineup is in Red while all other businesses are in black. Also look at the change YoY figure

You said they NEVER made profit out of Xperia which is clearly a wrong statement.

Sorry if that's indeed the case. Although I couldn't find any reference to SMC making profit in the FY2013 results. Maybe you can upload a screenshot.

Thanks.

Do those numbers include losses attributable to Vaio?
I've been hearing a fair amount from various places that a lot of SMC's loss is down to the failing and horribly unprofitable Vaio division.

Cheers.

On a side note. Sony's stocks jumped up massively to just over 19. I'm guessing that's a response to finance report release. A good sign.

how are xperia line up no making any money at all, which makes no sense. Sure their market share is tiny and don't sell samsung numbers, but they still sell millions and popularity is increasing in a lot of region. I think some time ago they said they are still restructuring their mobile division after the purchase from Erricson and moved everything to Tokyo, are they still not done with that?

They won't go out of business.. they might become a smaller company, but they have enough depth to keep the ship afloat.

The switch from desktop computing to mobile computing is hurting them more then they expected I think. Samsung was never able to compete with Vaio in the PC business, but in mobile... different story.

The general problem with being a hardware OEM is that you are always someone's "puppet" .. in Sony's case it was Microsoft for about 10 years and now Google's for who knows how long. By selling android devices Sony makes more money for Google then they do for themselves

"We are also discussing whether to change the number of phones in our line-up and adjust their lifecycle," Yoshida said, speaking at a news conference after the company released its results on Thursday.

I wonder if this might lead to the end of the 6 month flagship cycle and bring a new yearly flagship cycle.
