@felimenta - XS has a great screen, no doubt. viewing angles actually are quite similar, though how the colors shift/fade are different. hard to describe.. just have to see it for yourself.

I can absolutely determine that this is a hardware issue. Even with the right of the frame focused, it's still a bit soft. With a third party app, like Camera MX, the effect is not as big, but still noticeable. Going to wait one more week, see if any new firmware will be out and pray for the impossible. Which is fixing a hardware issue with a software update..... Oh well, the pain of losing my Z1 is going to be great. Now deciding between a full refund or an exchange. Aaah, the choices.

Its most likely the optics.. its very tricky to make such small wide lens sharp from end to end. It was the same exact thing with the N8.. you can remedy the situation with software, but it will never go away.

Depending on the manufacturing process Sony are using, this issue might vary greatly from phone to phone.. if they are adjusting the elements on each lens individually for greater precision (which is what Nokia does with the 808) they might be able to adjust their manufacturing..

Its all guess work for us.. but I am hoping that the number of units affected is low.

Hubble had the same problem and your Z1 but after a shuttle ride - a few billion Dollars and a space walk - they fixed it

It changes under crazy angles but who cares? Really?
This idiocy is quite surprising.

its not idiocy, when you pay 700 euros! as much as the xperia z ultra, AND 100 euro more than the LG G2, you would except to get a screen as the same level with them or the HTC ONE or the IPHONE...

But it is on the same level. And only Sony is waterproof and dustproof.
Pointless discussion.

The screen isn't on the same level, I'd say HTC One, LG G2 and S4 have better screens.

well go buy one and fcuk off from this thread - fed up listening to your none contribution bull- it's really getting tired and annoying - consider this a serious slap, you deserve it

@moogoo

The photo doesn't do justice. It looks quite better viewing by eye...

This is an XS. The viewing angles are almost as good as Z1. I am completely impressed...

@away - i think they got smarter with the new 3.0 version heh..

oh well.. i can wait a bit..

ok so i ran outside real quick and snapped some shots in various modes using the stock camera and camera FX app from the play store..

also drew up a little test thing to see what exactly is going on. the strange thing is .. earlier i was testing the camera and i could clearly see a slight "blur" on the right side.. but then using a the camera FX app, it wasn't there anymore. strangely enough, i couldn't recreate it!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/oogoom/sets/72157635928110394/

i'll post some pics of the screen a little later..

UPDATE:

so i took a few more pics of my Z1 box and was able to "eliminate" the right side blur. there are 4 pictures. 2 from camera zoom FX app, and 2 from stock app.. both on manual, both at 8mp resolution. When taking these photos, i focused on the same exact spot.. the area right under the "C6903". I cropped the important section (and of course my IMEI out). But as you can see, the stock camera has a smudge/blur on the right side at the "LTE BANDS" area.. while the camera zoom FX photos don't (instead for some reason the place i focused on is blurry! weird..).

Since the right side blur isn't reproduced here consistently between apps, it seems like it's probably a software issue. why or how? i don't know. but if it were an optics issue, i would think it would always be there regardless of the camera app being used.

what do you all think?

UPDATE 2:

hah ok. so i went a lil crazy and started snapping a whole lot of pics of the label on the Z1 box. with/without flash.. with touch focus instead of shutter button focus..

the smudge/blur is just not consistently in every picture and at the same spot. this makes me feel confident that it's a software issue and not a hardware one, which should and would, create the same issue in every photo, no matter the settings or app used. again, i don't know if using a different app even matters because i don't know if they use their own jpeg processing or if they use the stock one.. but the photos seem to speak for themselves.

in the first set of 4 photos of the box - the first two clearly show a focus issue/blur to the right - the second two show focus issue/blur across the whole image - that's what I see anyway

putting that aside - I believe this is a software issue and not hardware, the photo of the box is a good idea to experiment with settings etc I'll bet you find a setting that isn't blurred and that completely rules out the hardware - maybe even using the burst mode

yea. i will continue to test it when i have more time.

but i am pretty sure it is a software issue. i think MNX's issue may be hardware though. his blur is much more severe it seems..

and nice monkey slap hah..

Its like you go on the Apple forums Mac computers are the most terribly thing invented according to the forum, but then that is just 0.0000001% of all mac owners because noone goes on a forum just to praise the quality of the laptop or the xperia z1 here.

On another note, very interesting that Sony is releasing an Android Walkman with a 128 gig capacity in the ZX1. Makes me sad that they didn't at least offer the option of larger capcities in the Z1. Then again that Walkman is EXTREMELY expensive, so any phone with a similar capacity would be ludicrously expensive. The relatively limited storage won't affect my decision to buy a Z1 since I'll just pop in a 64 gig micro SD card as soon as I can anyways.

Just 2-3 more weeks until Canadian launch! w00t!

funny that the XZ didn't support 64gb when first released yet I had a 64gb sd card in it the first week, not saying that the Z1 will support 128gb as it's quite a step up but isn't it exfat ? anyway I find 64gb to be quite enough and have never been able to get beyond 40gb fill, I think on PC's we tend to throw a lot of stuff on there that is never used or looked at but on phones we are more selective and only fill it with stuff we actually need

According to this post on XDA the Xperia Z1 is using an AMVA panel.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441772

I don't know much about panels but are the AMVA's supposed to be any good?

My XS didn't have great screen, yet I wouldn't say it's bad.
When I compared it to my XP, it was clear what was good and what was less good.

About your question before, when I will be getting my Z1.
I skip it for now and will not be doing anything until next year's CES or MWC.

@mckinley whatttttt?!?!? you're the one who tempted me to order my Z1 by saying you had placed your order again!

and i love the colors on my XS. it's super bright and vibrant. though Z1 does indeed look nicer.

you should have fixed it before the pic - there is a monkey on here with very small brain but of course he can easily hang upside-down from the ceiling when reading this thread so to him it would look normal
