This idiocy is quite surprising.
its not idiocy, when you pay 700 euros! as much as the xperia z ultra, AND 100 euro more than the LG G2, you would except to get a screen as the same level with them or the HTC ONE or the IPHONE...
But it is on the same level. And only Sony is waterproof and dustproof.
Pointless discussion.

@MNX - i did the same thing. used xperia privilege without sim and with WIFI and it didn't say anything. Then i stuck my SIM in and tried again, and it said it would read the SIM to determine the region for offers. *shrug*

How more many pages before people realise it's a screen lottery? It's like people are only here to troll. The ignorance is astounding.
@moogoo
I remember when the offer was first introduced, people got around it easily. Try search for that way.

@away - i think they got smarter with the new 3.0 version heh..
oh well.. i can wait a bit..
ok so i ran outside real quick and snapped some shots in various modes using the stock camera and camera FX app from the play store..
also drew up a little test thing to see what exactly is going on. the strange thing is .. earlier i was testing the camera and i could clearly see a slight "blur" on the right side.. but then using a the camera FX app, it wasn't there anymore. strangely enough, i couldn't recreate it!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/oogoom/sets/72157635928110394/
i'll post some pics of the screen a little later..
UPDATE:
so i took a few more pics of my Z1 box and was able to "eliminate" the right side blur. there are 4 pictures. 2 from camera zoom FX app, and 2 from stock app.. both on manual, both at 8mp resolution. When taking these photos, i focused on the same exact spot.. the area right under the "C6903". I cropped the important section (and of course my IMEI out). But as you can see, the stock camera has a smudge/blur on the right side at the "LTE BANDS" area.. while the camera zoom FX photos don't (instead for some reason the place i focused on is blurry! weird..).
Since the right side blur isn't reproduced here consistently between apps, it seems like it's probably a software issue. why or how? i don't know. but if it were an optics issue, i would think it would always be there regardless of the camera app being used.
what do you all think?
UPDATE 2:
hah ok. so i went a lil crazy and started snapping a whole lot of pics of the label on the Z1 box. with/without flash.. with touch focus instead of shutter button focus..
the smudge/blur is just not consistently in every picture and at the same spot. this makes me feel confident that it's a software issue and not a hardware one, which should and would, create the same issue in every photo, no matter the settings or app used. again, i don't know if using a different app even matters because i don't know if they use their own jpeg processing or if they use the stock one.. but the photos seem to speak for themselves.

@moogoo Don't think you have the problem at all. Was scrutinizing your shots before the Z1 box. Didn't notice any right side blur. So far what I found out is, the best way to test it is to shoot an extreme depth of field shot with the object of focus being in the center, evenly dividing two sides. Here's an example:
You can clearly tell from this, one side is more blurred than the rest. The bokeh is not even at all. Can't even use the excuse of the object on the right is farther than the left because obviously on this shot the people on the right is closer than that one person on the left.

@MNX - wow.. i didn't think your problem was that serious based on the other photo samples you posted. hmm.. i would definitely get that checked!! mine seems to have a slight area of smudge/blur like i noted in my post, but yours is a full side! that's nuts.
i know this is a given, but have you tried giving the lens a good wipe with a clean lens cloth?

@moogoo Going to enjoy my Z1 for one more week, then send it back. Also doubt I'm godly enough to be able to smudge, just half the lens perfectly.

The screen isn't on the same level, I'd say HTC One, LG G2 and S4 have better screens.
And I would say it's not true. The only difference is the colour reproduction under the angles,
which is out-of-the-arse problem.
In the real usage none of those is really better. They're actually similar to Z.

here are photos of my screen. these are taken with my dSLR. I adjusted the aperture and shutter speed so that the images reproduced, as best as possible, what I was seeing with my own eyes. As you can see, the screen is pretty nice. Not PERFECT, but definitely, not terrible. The screen is at 100% brightness with ambient light detection OFF. Full set of the Z1 itself and unboxing and the microSD card i got is available here.
STRAIGHT ON

ABOUT 175 DEGREES

You got lucky. The display in your Z1 is as good as the ZU display. |

@dacha - i don't know. if it is as I haven't seen a ZU in person. I am very happy though. Like i said, i adjusted the camera settings at each angle to make sure it was reproducing what i was seeing. i honestly think it's a matter of who's taking the picture, with what settings, and if it's next to another phone/display. i'll take some shots later next to my XS to compare.
