if you look at the first iphone5s photo, you can clearly read the texts on the book to the left side of the photo. sony's photo is very noisy. they dropped the aggressive noise reduction but now you can't clearly read photo details because of the noise. same thing with the s4. they have the right combination of detail and lighting.

It's very simply why really. The Z1's ISO set was 1250. The iPhone was 320.
Come with an equal ISO shot and talk.

For a picture taken with ISO 1250, the noise level is good. Normally I don't like to take picture with high ISO due to the noise, but this is acceptable. Good job Sony.

If you look at pic3, with Z1, you can read the word COSMO clearly on the yellow banner and you can't read that on the iphone.

these shootouts are funny. after sony announced the Z1 and released that independent testing result to the world, Lumia and Apple users have taken great offense and seem to go out of their way to create skewed "shootouts" to make the Z1 camera look bad. It's funny. It reminds me of TV commercials between Verizon and AT&T.. "we have the fastest LTE network in the country" blah blah blah.. back and forth.

The only way to really test is to find a Sony fanboy who's a decent to good photographer and a Nokia/Apple fanboy who's a decent to good photographer and let them independently shoot it out and THEN compare.

Then there can't be any complaints to bias and whatever.

I'll be happy to take a crap ton of pics once i get my Z1 in a few days. I would rate my photography skill as intermediate to advanced, but not professional

I'll be posting them here and in the photo thread.. and hopefully in a full review if i ever find the time to write one up!

although they're a bunch of copypasters with that gsmarena photo headlining their post.

That was supposed to be review of Nokia 1020,,,but they bashed sony
"Sony Xperia Z1 has just hit the shelves and is priced closely to the Lumia 1020. The latest Japanese flagship also relies on a newly developed camera sensor and technology. It comes with a 20.7MP Exmor RS Sony sensor with a Superior Auto mode that produces 8MP shots from the raw 20.7MP images - Sony's answer to Nokia's PureView photos. Unfortunately, the Z1 can't keep both the full resolution shot and the downsized shot like the Lumia 1020. It also lacks optical image stabilization and a xenon flash. Not to mention that even the downsampled shots are nothing to write home about and the full resolution 20MP photos are lackluster. Despite having a 1080p display, the Xperia Z1 TFT unit is nowhere near the quality of the Lumia 1020's AMOLED screen. In fact, Sony's only advantages over the Lumia 1020 are its water-protection shell and probably, the Android OS (which is not little by all means)".

come on Sony put you new drivers in front seat show the world with your 20mp camera capabilities it can do..........Enough is enough....Sony Tokyo stop fighting with Sony Sweden,,,,,,just give bloody update........

^they already released an update

it's just that no one knows what it improved or fixed

i notice there are some people who don't like the position of the camera. I guess that's personal preference. I've never really paid attention, but I wonder if iphone users make the same complaints since their camera is in the same position..

For those with Z1..

are you planning to put a screen protector of some sort on front and back? are you planning to use a case? if so, which ones? I just took a look at what's available and these days there are a TON of new brands I've never even heard of. What's most important to me is that the protector is ULTRA clear, fingerprint resistant, does not effect touch sensitivity, and fits so well you can't notice it without really looking for it.

if you've tried something, please say which one and give a mini review. Thanks!

How far can you zoom on the Z1 when video recording without losing quality? Is it 3x the same as stills?

@Aurelius

You mentioned that there were discussions within Sony whether the camera software was good enough. My question is; was that discussion regarding the upcoming "big" software update or for the software as it is now? Any idea when it would arrive and how big the improvement would be, like significantly better or just slight. I understand if you cant answer the two last questions

GSM Arena has apparently updated their camera review to include HDR shots and the 8MP Superior Auto mode in their comparison tool:

http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z1-review-987p8.php

The 8MP SA shots are actually quite good IMO. I've checked all the images in comparison to the iPhone 5 and they overall seem to be about even. There are instances where each camera outperforms the other but on the whole when looking at all the images I think the Z1 wins for overall clarity.

So what is the latest word on the Z1 camera software? 2 weeks ago the insiders were mentioning the newer software should be out in a month. Anyone able to confirm if we're only 2 weeks away now? I don't think we've seen any camera samples that claim to have been taken with the newer software
