About the benchmarks - GNOTE3 runs on Android 4.3 which provides a nice boost to benchmarks. So once Z1 gets 4.3 it will score same or better than N3. Same for Z Ultra

As for OIS, Z1 has SteadyShot stabilization which I believe is some kind of in body image stabilization system. So you won't miss OIS at all. Just see the intro video, sony has put a lot of emphasis on lack of blur and highly stabilized videos.

S-Master was dropped probably because Walkman is not dead yet ( Walkman F886). So it makes no sense to hurt the potential sales of the F886 by putting in S-Master amp in the Z1. Regardless, Z1 should still sound very nice and better than all previous Sony phones.

Not to forget the special tweaks used by Samsung to specifically boost benchmarks. To be really honest, I must say after 2008, this is the first smartphone by Sony/ that is truly worthy for being a Sony flagship and leaves little to really complain about. Regarding audio, Z ultra already has the best audio scores in gsmarena but let down by the loud speaker. How is Z1's speaker btw? Is it any better than z/z ultra?

Also I noticed that during the ifa unveil, most of the developers were Japanese. Is z1's software development now handled by a different team?

@razec

"league' - depends what you need/use it for. For daylight images - I guess no issue, small differences here and there.
Lowlight (no flash) - that's where we see how really good X1 is
Indoors - No Xenon, no joy - as simple as that

Problem is both Xperia T and Z were quite week even in good light conditions, making then practically unusable at least for me coming from like you said great Nokia camera phones.

BUT

again in all fairness, some of the images posted with TX were amazing - yet we found out those were some proto/experimental units that never went into retail model. Hope that's NOT the case with Z1.

Also, bike image with latest firmware from Xperia blog (think it's xxx. 518) is quite bad/ugly TBH
xxx.510 - top notch every single one

Cheers,
Miki

14.1.G.1.518 the one with the bike has quite a bit of noise... The lighting conditions, the settings used to take these photos etc all play a major role on the resulting image... I don't think it is easy to compare these firmware versions without using similar shots...

Hi guys,

Sorry to write a similar message again, please bear with me.
I would like to summarise the camera specs as it seems to be such a beast.
Could we reuse this summary and gradually add links to confirm or correct the below when unsure?

1) [confirmed] premium G lens with f2 apperture
2) [confirmed] brand new 1/2.3" inch 20.7 MP sensor featuring BSI
3) [unsure] Steadyshot is sensor shift stabilisation AND is activated in photo mode (link please)
4) [unsure] Pixel Binning technology, from 20MP to 8MP (how come?). Is this hardware like HTC one or post processing like photoshop? (link please)
5) Bionz for mobile: is this a chip or a software handled by Snapdragon 800? And by when the "firmware" will be updated to get the most of the camera? (link for the chip/soft part please)

In advance thanks!

3. seems to me software IS, unless Sony specifies it as HW as they would be keen on highlighting such fact

4. just a simple resizing i guess, but the fact that it has BIONZ would suggest it it may do some de-noising before downsampling them to 8mp. but I guess one thing for sure that BIONZ does is to make that time shift burst possible

5. seems to me software based. again we know Sony will even go as far as showing a 3D render of how it looks inside like Z1 like they do with most BIONZ powered cameras if it's HW based

using latest firmware Z1 photo sample

I'm disapointed. This's not right way for Sony. Bad detail due by strong noise reduction. Images not bad , but not are good.

Two Best shots by Z1

@Razec Lol I love having you on this forum. Putting idiots in their place since... Well, since long before I joined probably.

@Admad You're fighting a losing battle bud, who are you trying to convince anyway, us, or your aching wallet
there are clearly far more good picture sample than bad, and your only talking point was smacked down by someone who knows much more than you in the subject. Off with you, see you at the release for Honamini

Lol I didn't knew You love being put into place by razec

What razec is talking about is true but only when 2 compared objects are at different distance to the sensor, in this pic You can clearly see that the group of people I cropped and people at the center of the pic are at the same distance to the sensor (more or less) so it's impossible that effect mentioned by razec is taking place. Furthermore the blur in my crop is clearly from overprocessing rather than bad focus.

Tisk tisk, and just after having spoken to Razec on the 2013 Rumors Thread about English reading comprehension? I get what you were going for but it was a bit of a reach. Based on what I've seen so far, this camera has the potential for excellence, and if it stumbles in certain situations, then that's more your fault than the camera's - good enough for me, I'll spend time learning how to get the most out of the camera instead of taking shots with bad framing/settings that set it up for failure. That said, it still outclassed the other big name smartphone cameras (except 808, which no doubt outperforms it) in the head-to-head comparison on auto settings, so I think Z1 will keep me from making too big a fool of myself amongst other venerable photographers such as yourself.

Another good news is Z1 supports H.265 codec

Man, this is HUGE!!

Are you sure Ramu? Because Z1 white papers don't contain H.265 support?

And another thing, will I get a better picture quality (primarily noise levels wise) if I take pictures with 8MP mode rather than 20MP?

It's mentioned in the whitepaper Ambi,

Check here

I believe it's better to take a 20MP picture and later resize it to 8 MP or lower on your PC as 8 MP shots will have less noise but also less detail compared to a 20 MP shot.

The latest pictures have me much more interested in Honami now.
A good photographer will take good shots even with a lousy camera, but this is anything but lousy.
I'm convinced that this phone is a trailblazer.
