You are right, 3G phones are going to be larger than ordinary gsm. But then, you NEED a large screen for video calls, and you need a large battery to power it all.
I want the Z1010 on 3... and I want to know how long I'll have to wait... The network is ready, just need the handset.
Question about longrange bluetooth, do both bluetooth devices have to be long range for it to work at 100m?

If it has a flash adapter (like some Toshiba phones in Japan), a colour second display instead of a b/w one and it's tri-band/quad-band GSM for the U.S. as well as W-CDMA (for Japan) then it would be almost a complete phone.

No WCDMA handset has a colour external screen at the moment, for power consumption reasons.
And the flash was just a one-off from toshiba for the J-T51
it wasn't successful and they moved to integrated flashes. I doubt would make the same mistake.
I do hope the Z1010 is tri-band though.
probably think the US are years away from WCDMA, but I hope they take into account Europeans that want to roam with their new 3G handset!

I think the Z1010 is a bit too big for my taste. Just look at the image that Hobbes linked to a few posts ago, where you can see a guy holding it. It is _not_ the size of a Panasonic GD87, or Samsung T100, but considerably bigger.

Is this the picture you are talking about?
I think it looks about the same size as my Sharp GX10, maybe thicker.
What does everyone else think?

From the photo above, I can tell that Z1010 is about the size of T68 with flip closed... but its definately thicker (I make about 35mm). Its size closed is very reasonable and portable.
When its open, that's another case! It's huge, but after all there is a reason for it (large screen). The good thing is that, it's not necessary to open the flip to receive-make a call, since it does have bluetooth
What surprised me is the fact, that Z is better than the 3G phones operating in Japan (unless I missed something)!!! It's the most full featured 3G phone.
Anyway... a state of the art phone! Bravo SE

I just remember one phone rumour sometime in august last yr....the prototype from Apple and to certain extend this Z1010 resemble tht prototype especially on the keypad and colour screen layout/design
Hmmm maybe it is from the same designer...not saying it is bad but just feel that SE(or Ericsson) have finally get design tht is well accepted by the market.
One of the most ironic things I notice on 3G model offered by Nokia and SE is that....Nokia 6650 opt for Marker Pen antenna while Z1010 opt for integrated antenna. |

my first impression was the lack of the standardized operating software: yes, symbian series 6 !!
why didn't choose symbian ? the resolution of the screen perfectly matches the nokia 7650 !

It'd really be a shame for something so powerful to use such a limiting OS wouldn't it? |

Just my own comments on few things posted earlier.
For those who are a bit upset about SE replaceing the familar "Yes/No" buttons with softkeys, well I was a bit concerned when i saw the alleged pics of the 610 too, btu then when I thought of it, and looked back, the ericcson "Yes/No" were always softkeys anyway. They perfromed different function based on where you were, make a call, switch calls, hang up, select a menuitem, save a setting, cancel, voice dial, go/back on WAP. In fact it was only when the T68 came out with the joystick that SE/Ericsson had an "alternative" select method other than the "Yes" button (pushing down on the joystick), whcih left our beloved Yes button for simply makign calls. All SE has done is taken into account the already multi nature of those two keys, and instead of adding multiple labels to the keys themselve (yes/call/go/accept) they turned it into a softkey, and used the phoen display to display a correct label based on what the phone is doing at the time.
I personally think this is a good idea, for human computer interaction, and makes it easier to understand (not that it was that hard before).
As for those who are begging the question of why the concept phone designs are not utilised in real models, well that one is obvious, because those phones are designed by designers who dont really take into accoutn the engineering specifiecs. Once you have a design, and then try to fit the engineering specifics of a phone, as well as usablity, there is always a compromise. It really depends on the tradeoffs that people are willing to make for general acceptance. But on saying that, this phone is definately sexy. I dotn care how big it is, but it reminds me of the Sony Magnesium allow laptops. And i think in reality it woudl LOOK smaller than it really is.. |
