My understanding of this is that those rumored "lenses" are basically digital cameras without displays being controlled with a smartphone. If that's the case then I honestly don't get the point of releasing such stuff. |

It's the best of both worlds combined, there is no smartphone in this world that can outperform a RX100 II (galaxy NX is not exactly a smartphone BTW) for camera performance, and there's no smart camera that can outclass a flagship smartphone on telephony and convergence. if you have this, you can get the best of class image quality without compromising productivity needs that a smartphone can give you.
It is not an accessory for mass market, it's a niche accessory, designed for one thing, bragging rights

Thanks being the first to finally answer my question. A couple of pages of this thread could have been saved if someone had chosen to just answer it there and then, rather than coming up with some snide response.

It's just an idea and it's not directly linked to the new phones we expect from Sony but I really thought I should share it here.
Some days ago when Lumia 1020 was announced there was this add-on piece with extended battery and a shutter.
And I thought something was missing. Since one adds bulkness anyway then why not add more stuff like a lens.
What do you think about combining things like this? Would you be interested?
An add-on like this can be used by people who care about high-quality photos when needed and still allow them to buy a slim, nice looking phone like the Xperia Z for example. |

I think this is a very interesting concept:
- Kind of ideal for people that were considering the galaxy zoom or nokia 1020 for the camera but did not buy it because of the form factor.
- Secondly, many people have an iphone, galaxy or other, so they could hope sell the accessory even if people do not have a xperia. It would be smart for Sony to ensure a maximum of people can use it with their current device, but that you can get the most of it on Xperia, to then create a hardware ecosystem and raise future xperia sales: one sony would reach it's goal here.
- Finally, there is no competitor (that i know of yet, but my little finger tells me samsung will start copying this next Monday and waits for September 4 to decide the name).
However, I agree this is a niche market, so if they cannot make mass volume, it means it will be pricey. I think it needs to be max around $400, because above this people would consider a mirorless camera. Then they would use internals to ensure it beats postential competition but generate comfortable return, so I do not expect Zeiss.
I hope Honami will sport a hardware bionz chip, to differentiate against other s800 devices.

I don't give two craps about the camera on a phone and would prefer the thing not to have large bumps on the back, so this stick on lens sensor thing seems like a good idea.
If you just want an excellent phone with a competent camera the honami will deliver in spades, if you want a better camera with your phone and don't mind the bump and extra bulkiness then you will be catered for with this stick on sensor/lens. |

Not confirmed yet, only one thing is sure, whichever they pick, it will be composed of over 99.99% of vaccum:

So we may as well wait and see.

@nightwing, we don't mean to insult you, but you are in the internet, you can get the answer you want if you just use your hands and look for it on your own
and in case you're not aware, Esato has a smiley for lazy and repetitive people like you
back on topic
We are not really aware yet what type of glass will be used for this special accessory, even though SAR says it'll be RX100-II centric, we can't rule out the possibility that a G lens would be used since compact cybershot cameras are also using them, but personally I prefer G lens over Zeiss, especially since it's a zoom optics. Zeiss are usually great for primes, but I'm not aware of an instance where a G-lens would lose to a Zeiss on anything but it. In fact even 3rd party lenses like Sigma EX series can outperform these Zeiss primes a fraction of its price (the new Sigma 16-35mm and the 50mm1.4 as the perfect example). if price is the consideration I hope Sony would go for Tamron optics (given that they own some shares with it) or Olympus Zuiko galsses (Sony announced a partnership with Oly a couple of months ago). Zeiss has always been overpriced despite that the quality seems to be just on par(sometimes worse) than the competition.

I think Xperia Z was a huge missed opportunity because there were many many small problems with it. One of them is screen lottery, the other is poor camera software, gray UI, 3.5 mm jack flap etc. If they could have gotten half of these problems right they would have sold much more units and the costumers would have been much happier but now Honami will have Z's bad reputation with it. They really messed up with Z. |
