Yes, sorry, you should install the flashmode drivers and the TX drivers (which are the same drivers as for the T). Both are near the bottom of the list.

Right, I tried that but it didn't work. Windows/PCC/SUS still can't detect the phone when off. 
Could it be because I had the phone connected to the PC while the flash tool drivers were installing?

No, that shouldn't be an issue.
Does Windows try to install any sort of drivers when you connect it turned off with the volume down button held (or does it not even flinch)?
When you connect with the volume down button held does the LED on the phone light up? What colour?

When it's turned off and I connect it to the PC, Windows doesn't respond at all. It doesn't try to install drivers or anything.
There isn't any light either on the phone...

This is quite strange.
Are you certain you're holding the volume down button as you connect the usb cable?
Have you tried checking the Windows Device Manager to see if thee is anything that looks like an incorrectly installed device?
Do you have access to another PC that you haven't tried before to try again?
Is you PCC up to date?

Yeah, the pcc should be up to date. I also had a look at the device manager and I think I saw one strange item on the list. I'll try reinstalling it when I get back home. If that doesn't work I'll try another pc.

@Nightblade,
Is your phone on mtp or msc mode? If its msc, try changing to mtp and then follow. Although, I dont think it's the actual reason, but it may cause it.
Also if it still doesnt work, connect your phone on a different usb port(preferably where you havent connected earlier) and then launch the pc companion. You will see the drivers getting installed. If this also doesnt work, then remove pc companion and reinstall it

After the re installing, you cannot connect the phone directly in flash mode. So first connect it in mtp, let the drivers be installed and then try to update it.

Right, I changed the usb port, reinstalled the PC companion and tried without holding the volume down button, but nothing happens. Not even the indicator lights up. 
I even removed the suspicious driver (I think it was an old sony ericsson one) from the device manager, but that didn't do it either.

OK, so I tried turning on the phone while connected to the PC and just before it actually started booting up, the green indicator lit up and the SEMC flash driver started installing. Then the boot sequence commenced and the installation couldn't finish...

Does flashtool recognise your device? That tool gives a better log output. Try version 0.9.10 from the previous versions section. When you run it completely exit PCC first.
Also, did you try the S(E)US standalone service?

Flashtool only recognises the phone when it's on. Tried SUS many times, didn't work.

Did you try djin's suggestion of changing the connection mode, then connecting to PCC again?
Have you had chance to try another PC yet?
I'm running out of ideas..

Tried changing the USB mode and on a different PC but that didn't work either. I think the problem might have to do with the phone itself.
I should probably just wait for the OTA update...

I seem to remember having the same problem. I had to wait for the OTA update too as it just wouldn't update.
