I was referring to all spectrums of tech not just phones, if you remember Sony introduced the walkman player and it was a mega first with Mega Bass. Mega bass was a huge bit of tech, especially from playing from cassettes. So to introduce this tech was a major thing back in the day. Although I agree I remember that Samsung phone that just looked a bit weird but it was bloody different which was awesome for phone designers, how them days of creativity with phones are gone, the boring slab look is all we see now. I do think Sony has the best looking phones at the moment with its NXT series, setting themselves away from the rest of the pack but just need more oopmh!
