I still have my N8 and I can tell you that the 808 is way better in every way, but even then it might still be frustrating for you.

In this case, since we are talking about the 808, I think the solution is to have two devices, one as a main smartphone/camera/gps/music player and one for productivity and media consumption. You can be always connected with the 808 since it can be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot.

I think an 808 + a Bay Trail windows 8 hybrid is the way to go.

I really like this, especially for $349

Combined with the 808.. it will be perfect for me Together they will cost you about $700 ... considering the amount of convergence both of these bring.. its a very good deal.

You will have

1. Camera/Video Camera (real P&S replacement)
2. Sound recorder with HAAC mics
3. GPS
4. High quality music player
5. A real PC/Tablet combo that can run X86 programs
6. Decent smartphone

Which is what I used to do, but I would never use a Symbian phone as my main phone ever again. Its a brilliant OS but far too dated and under supported now sadly.

I had to begrudgingly let go of the OS last year. Apart from the 808's camera, theres no other phone available right now running Symbian I can think of that would justify going with Symbian.

Google maps works fine for me on both my n8 and 808

Maybe the issues are outside the US only ? Either way.. not a good sign

speak for yourself... i tried the Lumia 920, an iPhone 5 and a Galaxy S3 LTE... trust me, I dont really need a candy looking OS to impress people. I need something solid, who works and which doesn't drain the battery life performing that smooth candyness

The 808, with its "outdated" Symbian OS performs better than anything. You just need to be patient and will see you can take the most out of it, even the keyboard (which I sometimes hate). But I truly love my 808, as I said for the lack of apps, a Kindle Fire HDx or an iPad mini is more than OK.

Trust me, I still find Symbian as being able to "do more " but sadly the things I do need it to do are no longer possible or becoming more and more difficult. Like I said, web browsing is a total pain on the device unless you read mainly mobile websites.

Ive been using Symbian since 2003, so id say ive quite a bit of patience as far as the OS is concerned.

Yes, the web browsing is weak.. but not a complete mess like it used to be on the older phones like the N8. If turn off java/flash/auto reload its quite quick. The problem is that that ARM11 processor simply doesn't have the raw power to handle java, and the RAM they use is way too slow for web browsing. Also, the browser itself is not written very well.

I just looked the iPhone 5s performance when it comes to browsing.. what a monster

Weak is an understatement. When I used my N8 as my main phone I would read sites like GSM arena daily. I tried recently, after 18 months of more of the web becoming more complicated, pages having ever more complex scripts running on them and I now find even Opera struggles.

Web browsing is a key part of using my smartphone. On my N8 I had to start reading mobile sites for it to even be enjoyable.

And the 808 is much slower than almost every phone on the market at the moment if you don't consider budget handsets, which is the point im making and why I now use a more up to date OS.

True, if you are doing heavy browsing you need a bigger screen and a faster browser. I personally would rather use something over 10 inches for that purpose anyway.

Did you see this comp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kR7CSAIHtw

Its not as bad as it use to be.. without java script it hangs with safari

But you cant carry a tablet with you everywhere you go.

Phones like the current flagships with their 5" screens, fast processors, lots of ram and brilliant operating systems now make possible what once wasn't - true convergence. The Nokias of old were brilliant convergence devices such as my N95, but now Symbian isn't strong enough to be as converged as the N95 was in 2008.

Anything over 64mm width is too wide for me.. I need to be able to use my phone comfortably with one hand, otherwise its a struggle. That's why I really like the iphone 5 / Nokia N9 / 808 type size.

I think with a bit of work they can fit a 4.3 incher into a 62mm wide chassis.. that would be ideal for me.

some crafty work here.. considering that I have 3 back covers, I might convert one into something like this.

But like the article says, if you're going to do this why not buy a DSLR in the first place ?

The whole point of Pureview is to show whats possible from a cameraphone.
