The problem now is, for people who don't have one is that they're even harder to find one, unless you go for a second hand unit.

here in the UK they were not that popular, very hard to get one even from amazon. I'm trying to convince a friend to buy one to replace his N8 but he feels tempted with the 1020 (yuk!)

I guess i will keep my 808 + kindle fire hd combo for a lil while. this phone amazes me every day.

Not that popular in the UK ? it wasn't even sold except by online retailers sim free. None of the networks would touch it.

Ive never seen an 808 in person. Ive not seen anyone with one or know anyone with one apart from people online. The other problem now is that Nokia do not make them anymore. Apparently manufacturing stopped in February. That also means, in two years time when the phone is very old and the batteries in the phones start to get old and lose capacity, you wont be able to replace them. No doubt Nokia will no longer manufacture the batteries of phones from their past.

So then theres the hope Nokia / Microsoft then put 808 technology into a Lumia phone. The 1020 is that imo, but they've clearly struggled to make it happen and it still needs fine tuning to make even 808 owners switch.

Id really like to see in a few months time the 1020 to receive software updates to the OS and the Pro Camera app that makes it on par or beat the 808, which it needs to do.

I made a little experiment and resized a few images from full res down to Sony Z1 resolution, which is ~5300x3000 and what I found out is that you can push the 808 up to about 14-15Mpix and it will hold up nicely, but anything above that and you will start to see those tiny 1.4 micron pixels show weakness.

Still much better than anything I've seen from the Z1 in full resolution tho..

I assume your red one is an "import" with no US warranty ?

And yes, I just looked and they went up in price for some reason.. Amazon had the US warranty white one for under $400 a while ago.

The 808 is for a particular kind of user.. more so than any other smartphone out there. You really need to know what you want from a phone to go for it, and like you say, to appreciate what it can do.

Yourself, mlife, and I seem to be on the same page when it comes to the 808.. but in this case we are the 0.1%

If you think about it 808 owners are a tough bunch to please..

To be able to use an 808 as a modern smartphone you really need to know Symbian well so that you can set it up in a way for you to comfortably use it as a daily smartphone. That way you can remedy some of the shortcomings of the overall very weak hardware and some of the software limitations.

However, once you do set it up, and you are in fact content with Symbian.. its very, very hard to switch to anything else out there. You have to remember that most people who use an 808 are into photography, and thus far.. I am yet to find anything that can replace the 808 in terms of raw imaging power and overall IQ.

Its just easy to get used to that kind of performance, and from that point on.. everything else feels like a downgrade. I am kind of an extreme case, but all I need is one look at a jpeg file from another phone and I can tell right away where it stand in relation to the 808.

Let's say that the 808 is a 10 in terms of image quality and flexibility, or in other words.. the benchmark.. I am yet to find a smartphone that comes to the 8 point mark relative to the 808. The 1020 might get close after several software updates, but there is only so much you can do with inferior (smaller sensor, weaker xenon, etc) hardware.

If I had to come up with a replacement..

Symbian 11.x with Swipe UX (no nav buttons ala nokia n9)
Full QT 5.0 including a new QT web browser.
4.2 incher thin frame (not more than 63mm wide)
720p 16:9 aspect ratio
dual core
1GB RAM
1″ image sensor (don’t care about the hump) or something a bit better than the 808.
Xenon
Water proof

preferably called: Nokia 909 PureView

I would buy it right away

You don't have to convince me over Symbian, you may or may not remember until 2012 and the Galaxy S3 came out I was a die hard Symbian user only. Android had to reach Ice Cream Sandwhich before imo it was even comparable to Symbians functionality.

I didn't know that..

Well then if you are ok with Symbian, you should give it a shot. The Symbian experience on the 808 is much better than anything else i've tried thus far.

Here are some video i made along side my iphone 5 with ios6

turned off flash and java.

Well Belle is great on my N8, which I still use almost daily as a camera, even though it can be a little laggy at times.

I could use Symbian as my main phone, but now in 2013 im finding Android is better as my main phone for reasons such as media content. My S3 is great because of its brilliant screen size and colours, I enjoy up to date apps like Instagram, Flickr, Flipboard, as well as core Android apps like Gmail which were all hit and miss on Symbian.

Nokia Social was all but useless with Facebook also.

The fluidity of a modern OS is too strong now for Symbian sadly.
