Its far from better Those are only 4 shots... I need a set of 20-30 shots (original files) to really get a feel for how big the difference really is.

And.. Steve shot all these in auto mode, which is fare, but the 808 shoots @ 85% jpeg compression in auto mode compared to 95% for the 920.. so he needs to change that in the settings of the 808 next time around.

^ all of that is impressive to look at .. But the results speak for themselves, nothing else comes even close to what the 808 can do, especially when it comes to flexibility. The 808 would give you acceptable results in more situations than any other smartphone.

Just learned something interesting..

Nokia oversampling algorithm is very similar to this one, used on PCs

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanczos_resampling

Apparently there are minor differences, but that is pretty much it.

Now, the trick is.. with the 808 all of it happens in real time. On a PC to process a 38Mpix image with this technique requires a second or two of processing time, where the 808 does it almost instantly So that is one big part of the secret behind those "pure" 5 and 8Mpix shots.

No problem, its from here: http://www.test-mobile.fr/tests/nokia/nokia-808-pureview-047279/

also, this algorithm is used for video recording, which is supposed to bring the best balance between quality and file sizes. I can confirm, my iPhone 5 produces larger files in 1080p mode (especially at night) than the 808, but the quality is not any better.. in fact, most of the time is inferior to the 808.

This algorithm requires powerful hardware for the needed processing...

In My Opinion, Using The Capture Mode Pureview In Daytime Photos With Good Lighting In Certain Scenes... 808 PureView PRO Equals Quietly And Even In "Some Cases" Overcomes a DSLR Entry !

P.S: However In Most Situations, DSLRs Exceeds 808 PureView PRO !!!

I think it does, but even if it doesn't it comes close enough to where it doesn't matter .. in certain situations. As shown in the test posted above, it does very well against a mid range DSLR.. there is no other smartphone out there that can even come close.

It doesn't exceed any current dslr or the ones from the last few years. It's a damn good camera and in certain conditions seems to be as good as some dslrs. But the dslr has way more potential. Already the jpegs from a dslr will have more details and dynamic range and better noise performance which is somewhat visible on those comparison shots but since the scene is very well lit even normal cameras would do almost as well as a dslr. And something that should be noted is that they used a standard 18-55 kit lens with the canon. The difference would be much much more noticable if it was a prime lens or a high quality zoom lense. A fixed focal length makes a big difference in sharpness and detail.
Besides that If you work with a dslr than you would rather use the raw files. If edited correctly it will be much better than the automatically created jpegs.

What I'm trying to say is that such a comparison is pretty pointless. If people buy a dslr to use it as a point and shoot it would be a complete waste. You buy a dslr to get the best shots no matter what condition and for the sheer options and convenience it offers you. Sure the 808 performs better than point and shoots but not better than all of them out there and is still well below the performance of mirrorless cameras let alone dslrs.
