well
i did not like the stock earphone which comes with the device
so i was looking for something better
i really liked this one
but this one says its for iphone,
so i was wondering is there something different in the iphone
which makes it only work perfectly with the iphone
or it will be ok with my Xperia ray??

I think I have read somewhere that the fourh connector on the 3.5 mm plug that is required for the microphone is placed differently compared to the ground connector on iPhone compatible plugs compared to SonyEricsson plugs. I think it's because they conform to two different standards. Wonderful with standards, isn't it? Especially when there are many of them. Anyway, it should be easy to make an adaptor to put betwen the plug and the jack. |

The Xperia S can't use some of the older headsets from Sony Ericsson either. If you try to use for example a Xperia Arc headset with the Xperia S, the message "Accessory not supported" pops up on the screen  |

The 2011 and earlier SE phones used the OMTP standrad for the 3.5 mm jack. The 2012 line up uses the CTIA standard instead, which IPhone is supposed to use as well. The OMTP and the CTIA standards are not compatible out-of-the-box, sp you need a cheap adapter to make them work together.
If you have problem to connect your IPhone compatible headset to the 2012 line up of phones, try to press and hold the volume rocker up or down before connecting the headset and the phone should be able to recognize the headset.

Thanks. You are absolutely correct.
I found it out myself as I had to find out this for my Xperia S review. Sony Ericsson uses OMTP and Sony Mobile has switched to CTIA. This Sony Smart Headset works with Sony Xperia P, S, U and Sola and it is not compatible with Sony Ericsson phones. The older LiveSound Headset works with Sony Ericsson phones, but as the compatibility note says: It does not work with Sony phones.

The difference between the two standards is about which of the connector rings on the plug that is used for the microphone, and the sound quality should not be decreased by using an adaptor, unless it's of a very poor quality.
When I bought my Xperia Ray, the LiveSound headset was packed with it, and that headset works quite well with good sound quality. Personally, however, I prefer a bluetooth headset, MW600 for example. A good thing with bluetooth is that there are no connection compatibility issues. It works with all phones that support A2DP, iPhone too, actually. |

I Agree with you, I have LiveSound and MW600, I use MW600 if I go out, and I use LiveSound at home
I like the Freedom when using MW600, and the In-Ear is securely fit and more comfortable to the ear than LiveSound.

Are we talking about the same type of headset? At least mine is an in-ear design too, very similar to the MW600 earplugs.
BTW, there is a walk-around for the two different connection plug standards: The difference is that the mic and ground connectors are swapped. If the headset has an answering button, it usually is designed so that the mic and gnd are short-circuited when the answering button is pressed. In order to make the phone to detect wether a plug without microphone is connected to the phone (TRS, or three-terminals) or a headset with a mic is connected (TRRS, four terminals), the electronics and logics in the phone tests wether there is a short circuit between those terminals when the plug is connected, and if there is, it disconnects the microphone functionality and uses the phone's internal mic instead.
Consequently, if you hold in the answering button while connecting the headset, and then continue to press and hold the button, the sound should be heard in both ears, since then the left channel will be correctly grounded through the answering button. The answering functionality cannot be used then, of course. | |
