Samsung has set aside $200 million to spend on legal fights next year. The patent dispute with Apple will surely result in extra bonus for some lucky lawyers in 2012

We are ending the year with an article about one of the most discussed issues in the mobile business this year. The legal battle between Samsung and Apple.

Samsung and Apple are two of the worlds largest maker of electronic equipment. Well, Apple design the hardware and are mostly outsourcing the production to other companies. Samsung and Apple are successfully doing business in several areas such as Apple buying flash and DRAM memory modules for the iPhone. In fact, Apple is Samsungs largest component buyer.

One of the areas where the two companies are in direct competition is the tablet and smartphone business. Apple claims Samsung violates 30 of their patents and Apple has drawn Samsung to court in 10 countries to proof this. Apple has successful managed to hinder the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 from entering several markets. According to the South Korean newspaper Korea Times, the Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung said that the company has already allocated $200 million for the legal fight next year.

Based on this figure, let us do some interesting calculations. Samsung is expected to sell close to 150 million smartphones in 2011. The company no longer reports its mobile phone shipments or average selling price, but a reasonable estimate is $140 per device. If all the 200 millions are spend on the smartphone battle with Apple it means that on each smartphone phone sold $1.33 (200/150) are used on court expenses. This means that 0.88% of the handset selling price are spent on court battles. Interesting to see that Apple's research and development (R&D) spending the last quarter was 2.2% of sales.

So if Samsung are doing this, im sure Apple are.

So if between just those two companies they're saving $400m just to waste in the courts - thats pretty disgusting.

Im sure $400m could go some way to preventing poverty and children starving to death in Africa.

@etaab: let's be honest. They would better waste that money in R&D.

Exactly, its ridiculous. I find this whole planet disgusting how major corporations can make such huge amounts of profit and then the worlds ruling powers dont do a thing about it.

I once read that Shell, the oil giant makes over $1m profit every hour of every day ! to think we as people stick a few coins in charity boxes to help people abroad like i mentioned in Africa (since a few hours earlier to posting i saw an appeal on the tv), when companies like Shell could take 24 hours off making profit and solve issues like these.

As much as i think Samsung are making a good decision to put some money aside to take on morons like Apple, i think its morally wrong to do so.

Samsung Slaps Apple With Patent Lawsuit in France

and this one from just the other day...

Samsung hauls Apple into court over emoticon patent

in fact you just need to google "Samsung sues" to see they sue in other industries too!

are Samung morons too?

btw, Happy New Year

People in power have wasted money from day one whatever they do. I recently read the EU ministers had research done into weather water actually hydrates you & if prunes make you goto the toilet or not. Seriously, are they for real Sorry that was off topic but you get the idea of money wasted everywhere.

@ Masseur - i know you're quite the Apple fan, but im surprised you jumped to defend Apple (yet again) so violently from the topic.

I really dont care about comparing Apple and Samsung in this thread, im talking about the vast amounts of money companies make, spend and waste on things which really are completely unimportant to people dying in Africa, people suffering years on in New Orleans and still do not have a home, people in China, Turkey and India where earthquakes have devastated towns and cities. Then theres the people in Japan who've suffered due to this years tsunami.

Im sorry if me calling Apple morons made you jump off topic to defend Apple, but thats what they are to me and will be until the day they go out of business. Therefore i will speak of them in such a manner every time i mention them.

Anyway, back on topic..

Why was my post off topic? the opening post (i.e. the intention of this topic) says nothing about the issues you mention? Indeed it seems mostly to be about how well lawyers will do from all this

I am really sorry if you read my post that way (as Apple defense). I merely once again wanted to post a balancing neutral position showing that what one company does is also what every company does. If anything, yours was the "strong" post so vehemently calling Apple morons when indeed all companies do just the same. Does this mean I should call you a non-Apple fan? I wouldn't do that as I'm not really into pigeonholing.

But, I totally agree with the secondary point of view of this topic when it comes to wasting money, but I guess the same can be said of most governments who probably have a more direct connection to the suffering of the world as most do provide aid but in a limited fashion so as to appear to be doing good. I'm not sure the likes of Apple or Samsung do such things, though Microsoft (well, Bill Gates and wife) certainly do.

Unfortunately, "the worlds ruling powers" i.e. governments, waste much more money, then companies do, IMO. And they're wasting the tax-payer's, so our money .

@ Masseur, i interpret the topic to be about money, how a company has set aside money to simply battle another company in court. Whether it be Apple, Samsung or any other company. So no i dont interpet it being about another Apple versus the world thread. I think the primary point of the thread is how money is being wasted by companies such as Samsung.

I think you were going off topic by making it another Apple versus the world topic.

Im purely interested in discussing the $200m Samsung are wasting on stupid legal battles. If it were me, i think i'd rather let other companies have their way and make a big song and dance about how my money (if i were Samsung) was being given to cancer research or something worthwhile. I actually believe if i did that id get more customers by doing that alone !

I know its all business at the end of the day and its going to happen one way or another but i find it very distressing that i live on a planet and no matter which country i go to live in it'll always be this way - morally corrupt !

I guess Samsung is feeling backed into a corner & has to have something to fall back in regards to all this. I guess they have to "budget" so much money in case of this. But again it's alot of money wasted & unfair they have to do it

Who are we to judge Samsung for their priorities? They are not the reason why there is powerty, and who knows maybe they give more then 200 mill to people in need I think it is great that someone challenge those companies who wants to rule the world
