I feel there is not much competition offered by them for the rest of the fiscal year sony since they have reduced their sales forecast. In any case I feel things will look better for sony than their past. The losses have been significantly reduced so far. Their aquisition of was only recently completed. If we look at the release date of gx(this weekend in japan) as compared to the announcement of ICS, their product developement seems to be about a year. So its possible that the new phones under sony will not be here before march 2013. But realistically, 2nd half of 2013 is where I bet they will be really competitive.

7.4 million smartphones shipped in Q2. Full year forecasr 34 million.
Mobile & PC business combined under loss. So can't really asses much about Sony Mobile as its been merged with Vaio division.
$19.2 billion in sales and no profit!!!! [CHANGE MANAGEMENT] kick the old guys We need to give more time to Kaz he cant just change the company in 3 months.

I guess lots of Ericsson Fans didnt buy sony phones
Nice one there, smclion102!!!
I happen to be one of those Ericsson fans who haven't bought a Sony phone yet.
I will still buy one if it that rumoured quad-core that is resistant to the elements.
The thing is though, Sony needs to take Samsung on. That is the only way to go for them, following will just not do.
I do think MWC 2013 will give us a clear indication as to which direction Sony will be taking.

How would Sony rank right now with the rest of the mobile phone manufacturers? Prob 6th or 7th?

I don't know whether that smily at the end means you are genuinely surprised or you are sort of winking at me. Didn't you post something about next year's portfolio that included that particular phone? That sounds like the perfect phone for my needs, of course, speaking in terms of full-touch as I am still waiting for a BB10, QWERTY phone from RIM.

Sony is in it for the long haul with the Vita. It will slowly build a following with each big game release. That's the strategy.
The XPlay has been canceled?

They didn't do too well but these numbers are still better compared to last year. So no Sony isn't going DOWN. Last year Sony Ericsson shipped only 22 million smartphones in 12 months. This year Sony is already at 15.5 in six months.
Sony Ericsson 2011 Sales:
Q1 - 8.1 million devices
Q2 - 7.6 million phones
Q3 - 9.5 million handsets
Q4 - 9 million phones
34.4 million Xperia smartphones sold for 2011
Please, get your facts straight!

Not all sales in 2011 are from smartphones. Now in 2012 they are. Sony (Ericsson) shifted their focus and stopped producing any non-smarphones. Also the average sales prices should be higher now, together with the gross margin.

Well, I am willing to bet my last money that that phone will cross the borders of Japan. The fact that they had the Active and now the go tells me they are likely to give us a high-end rugged phone for the worldwide market.

Yeah, because Sony Ericsson had so many feature and Symbian phones on sale in 2011... The only two non-smartphones were the Mix Walkman and Txt Pro, but I don't thing these two gained any popularity.
The best mobile phone brand died with Sony Ericsson's death. Shame on you Sony for killing it! And, of course, for ruining the Xperia brand... Mediar's Site |

The results are not surprising. The weak Euro, lack of demand, (weak global economy in general) is hurting Sony. It's not just Sony, if you take the gaming industry for example, games and hardware are selling well below expectations. I hope Sony will recover soon.
As for the Vita, people should judge if its a hit or a flop maybe after 2 years from now. It's premature to call it a flop. Even PS3 was in this state and it has recovered well. It needs a few great games, games like monster hunter, COD, etc. Sales will pick up big time when those games are released.
Sony is not going down anytime soon, they might have lost some value and they have had some tough times, but they are still big. People have the right to be Ericsson fanboys, but that doesn't mean Sony should perish just because they ended the joint venture. That's one ridiculous wish! |
