Nokia 500 Symbian Anna smartphone

While we are waiting for the first Windows Phone from Nokia to be announced, the Finnish company are still releasing smartphones running on the Symbian Anna operating system. According to the model name, the Nokia 500 is a mid-range model with a fast 1 GHz processor. It has a 3.2 inch touch display, 360 x 640 pixel resolution, 5 megapixel camera and are running on the lastest Symbian Anna operating system. Symbian might be a falling star, but there are still free and paid apps available at the Nokia Ovi Store.

If you take a look at the official Nokia 500 promotion video below, you will probably notice the sluggish scrolling in some of the demonstrated applications. We do not what do blame for this. The OS, or the processor.

Nokia 500 highlights

  • Weight: 93 gram
  • 111.3 x 53.8 x 14.1 mm
  • Networks: GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, HSPA 850/900/1700/1900/2100
  • 3.2 inch capacitive touch display, 360 x 640 pixel resolution, 16 million colours
  • 5 megapixel camera, video capture
  • 1 GHz processor
  • Symbian Anna operating system
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • Wi-Fi b/g
  • Talktime: 500 hours
  • Standby time: 420 minutes
  • 1110 mAh battery
  • aGPS
  • FM Radio
  • 2 GB storage, expandable up to 32 GB with microSD card

One interesting thing about the announcement today is the new (again) naming conventions. Out with the E, C and X characters followed by a number. This time only numbers will follow the Nokia brand name. Higher number means higher price and better specifications. The imaginary Nokia 100 is the most accessible option while an unannounced Nokia 900 will be the flagship model. The Nokia 500 which was announced today is therefore an average phone, and the naming convention makes room for selling 399 cheaper and 399 more expensive phones before starting all over again.

Nokia 500 will be available in quarter 3 2011 in the colors black and white. Battery cover colors: black, orange, khaki, purple, red, blue, green, pink, sliver. 2 back covers included in sales package.

I like the white/green combination, looks nice, better if it costs less than the current crop of mid-ranged android smartphones. also what and why was there that thing beside the earpiece on the white version that was missing from the black version?
