I can upgrade at the end of the month with Orange and I quite like the look of the HTC Desire, but just wanted to see what you guys might recommend...

I want something with a pretty decent screen; ie 16M colours, 3.5 inch or bigger and something that can play films on really easily, pref in divX/avi. Would also double up as my music player for the gym and a facebook app lol

Anything you guys can think of???

If going for an android based device... out of the box it can't play divx/xvid format, there are apps available which would allow you to... Some FREE and some that would cost a small amount...

There are couple of new options available to you...

HTC Desire (Which you mentioned)
X10 (Orange have exclusive of it in White)

There are lots of free apps around including the Facebook app

I went for the X10, as I prefer the larger screen size, especially for viewing videos on it, more internal memory (which is usefull for installing apps), comes with a 8GB SD card and 8mpx camera... and I like what they have done with the UI, especially Mediascape...

I did have the hero and the thing I find is that the desire looks different but feels the same with the Sense UI, but again is a decent phone...

Hope this helps

You might also want to consider what version of android each is running, with the X10 it's on 1.6 and the desire is on 2.1 so certain apps might not be available in the android market.

As for the divx/xvid player you might want to try:

i'm in the same boat, but upgrading from the hd. I want an upgrade from this in total, meaning from the screen, to the cam, to the hd recording etc. Think i'll be waiting a good while yet. I'm certainly not in a rush.

I'm getting the Desire next week, got a new sales person starting monday so have ordered another line with Orange but will be taking the Desire and giving them my Hero...

I can report back once I have it but it does look very good, basically a Hero taken to the next level... Been running a custom 2.1 ROM (Villain 5.2) on my Hero and can say that some of the improvements to Sense are excellent - such as now having the 'Mute' and 'Speaker' buttons on screen when you make a call so you dont have to press menu anymore... Also the larger screen looks like it will help text input - HTC keyboard is great (layout and correction system), but I have found myself 'M' rather than the 'Back' key sometimes but there is now a much larger gap between them and the whole thing in general.

Heard it will be getting an update from HTC (at some point) that will give it DivX support...
