it's that time again - upgrade time (every 18 months for me).

obviously i've researched all 3 phones thoroughly and carefully, and am well acquainted with their specs. the problem is that i don't quite know what i want. i'm on a contract and they are the only phones which are either free or may be free in another month and a bit time and which appeal to me.

so how am i to decide between those 3 phones if i don't quite know what i want? they are all very different phones for different purposes, and are not comparable with each other.

perhaps the best way for me to decide is by the process of elimination. for example, if i find out (say) that the samsung jet is impossible to debrand, then that will have to be crossed off the list. being on orange, i know that orange have tortured the software with their branding until the phone is on it's knees screaming for mercy, so the ability to debrand it easily is an absolute essential. in this case, i have already located a very nice forum which has all the tools and how-tos that will enable me to debrand the jet. i believe it's the same with tattoo, but i'm not sure about the e71.

so perhaps the best way to have my choice decided is to ask everyone to list various disadvantages of each of the above phones from their experience (or perhaps, things that they've heard). some disadvantages may be only minor/irrelevant points to me whereas some may be important enough for me to eliminate it from the list. by the process of elimination, i will thereby (hopefully) be able to make a choice.

so, what are the various disadvantages of each of the phones from your experience (or things you may have heard)?

thanks in advance

Debranding the Nokia E71 is relatively easy : you can use Phoenix to change the product code to an unbranded one, after that, simply update it, that's all .

You've mentioned it already, these phones are very different, so, depending on how you personally use a phone, it should be easy to pick one.

How do you use your phone most, do you text and email much on it ?
The keyboard on the E71 is great for these purposes, better than a virtual one, imho.
But the Nokia doesn't have a touchscreen, when you'd like have that, you might choose one of the other two.

Do you want a smartphone ? Two of them (E71 and Tattoo) are, the Jet isn't. Don't know, whether you're used to have a smartphone, they're not as laggy anymore, as they were some years ago and you can do so much more with them ! Non-smartphones still are a bit snappier, though, so you might consider one, when you don't need the many options of a smartphone. Personally, I'd always prefer a smartphone, so, when you're considering a Samsung, is the OmniaII too expensive with your contract ? It's so much better than the Jet.

I've had many HTC phones, but can't say anything about the Tattoo, never had Android, which would be my reason to choose the Tattoo, as I like to try a new phone, with new OS , you'll need a gmail account to use Android, though.

I agree with Marly,go with the Tattoo.
E71 is now old and has been replaced by E72, but it still a great allrounder and probably has the best batt life out of all 3 but its old, it runs S60v3 FP1, same as N95, support for it is dying, dont expect many fw updates, maybe another 2 but i think NOKIA is done with it.
SAMSUNG Jt is not a smartphone so its not as customizable as Tattoo and E71, also not many apps for it just crappy java apps.
Tattoo looks to be the one with an exciting future, the OS is still new and growing and all the phones are being updated to Android2.0 etc. . .

i text a lot and email a lot(but from the PC). none of my previous phones have allowed a googlemail(aka gmail) connection, but i believe all of the above phones will.

i would prefer a touchscreen, but that's only because i'm used to it with my current viewty. the e71 doesn't have a touchscreen, but that doesn't mean that i won't eventually get used to it and even prefer it over time.

gucci, samsung jet only allowing java apps doesn't bother me because i've never had a smartphone before. a dumbphone is what i'm used to, so i won't miss any smartphone functionality. i would like to try a smartphone though

i think i should mention what i like about all 3 phones.
why i like the samsung jet:
a) it has a great camera, and better than the e71 and tattoo
b) it has a 3.5mm jack - the tattoo does but the e71 only has a 2.5
c) great audio quality - the e71 and the tattoo don't seem to be as good
d) better for browsing than the tattoo and the e71

why i like the nokia e71
a) the possibility of owning a phone with a full qwerty. i've never owned one before, but from previous experience i've found texting using a full qwerty to be awkward. however, things might be different if i woned a ful lqwerty because i will then get used to it.....and may even get to prefer it (as you, Marly, alluded to).
b) more of an allrounder the tatoo and the jet
c) never owned a smartphone before, so was thinking of trying one out (i've used plenty of smartphones, but never owned one)
d) superb batter life (although the jet and tatoo are quite reasonable in this respect, they pale in comparision with the e71. none of my previous phones have had good battery life, and my current viewty is rubbish)

why i like the tattoo:
a) the google integration. i use googlemail(gmail), google calendar, and the rest of the google suite
b) i like the android OS (it has android 1.6, but i can easily flash it with unbranded android 2.1 or 2.0)
c) 3.5mm jack

Marly, the smasung omniaII isn't available on orange. there's the htc hero available, but i'm not paying 99 extra

cheers guys

i must add that the jet is no longer a consideration due to it being removed completely from the orange website (for some unknown reason).
i've also added some new phones to the mix due to price drops - moto dext, samsung tocco ultra(currently "out of stock", surprise surprise), and the SE w995(don't look shocked)
because various phones keep on going in and out of stock, it presently looks like the dext is the favourite, but if that goes "out of stock" then it's a toss up between e71, tattoo, and w995
