Personally I love a concise home screen. The whole point - imo - of a home screen is the initial start of using the OS; not a 1 stop shop of just about every information you need. This follows SE's, Apple's, and BlackBerry's original theme philosophy's.

Time, Date (not day of week/maybe so), Main application or core app functions on the front: Phone, Messaging, Signal type & strength, wlan connection status indication (and strength), and maybe two more listings like upcoming appointment (not the entire weeks'), Alarm countdown maybe(?). Again this is my personal belief.

When traveling I need basic information that I can discern at a very quick glance. Should I need specific details then I'll open up the respective application and dig further. ie. I don't need to see the entire day's appointments if its only 8AM. I just need to see the next appointment (possibly 1 after that; so 9AM & the 10:30AM appointment). Seeing the 3PM appointment at 8AM just adds clutter and really offers me no good (anything from 9AM appointment needed for the 3PM will be listed in the 9AM not the 3PM solely there). Even seeing if a new appointment I'm going to make anyway would conflict with an existing one - I'll just need to go into the Calendar and make a new appointment or adjust a time schedule that would fit anyway manually. It's not going to happen all by itself just cause its all listed on the home screen.

Now having 3 homescreens spreads out the whole plate in specific settings. Just don't forget that it was Nokia's E-Series (E66/E71) that debuted more than 1 homescreen direct from manufacturer back in Spring '08. The HTC Dream, released on 22 October 2008.

Considering has only joined the OHA on 9 December 2008, and announced a phone less than 1yr after joining while HTC had more than 1 year to announce and deliver their "Dream" I'd say has done a FANTASTIC job!! Personally I didn't even want an Android device, not even in the slightest, but with X10 I've taken a long look at it.

The ONLY part that bothers me is the company behind it all = Google, and no allowance for using Yahoo Search (that I know of) so its not fully open. I don't want my searches, email, web browsing habits, and contacts all archived and used at Google's will & choice. Sure those are already archived but NOT with my SIM card which is tied to my providers account, and with my personal address!!

It reminds me a bit the story of P1i. There were lags when scrolling through menus so they have removed the scroll animation in the software update to make it faster. SE optimization methods.

Have a feeling if Android ever get's a dominant position in the mobile market, we will see more of this "non-openes". So better get used to it.

Lets hope its just an intermediate fix for demonstration purposes. At least it looks smooth as silk when all picture are loaded and Timescape actually looks ready for launch.

Did any one else notice the location app in that French video. Looks nice and quite usefull, but unfortunately they didn't show more then the first screen.

@Prom1

+1

Very pertinent privacy concerns with Android/Google, I would be disappointed if ever there were no Open systems, Symbian /Maemo/ Linmo etc just to keep them "honest"

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Google were broken up fairly soon, they're too dominant in too many areas at the moment, and seemingly intent on leveraging that for all its worth. There are a few reasons why I wouldn't choose an Android phone personally, and the depth of Google's involvement (whichever phone brand you choose) is at least one of them.

Google isn't all that bad. They've got a lot of information on everyone. but they're the one company that has repeatedly refused to give up that information when the government has requested it from them for whatever purposes.

Sure there's privacy issues, but I think the least of our worries is google at the moment. There are bigger fish out there with worse intentions than giving us products to make our lives easier.

I have to admit this has crossed my mind many times since the X10 was announced. We all probably use Google far more these days for many different tasks. Now they've stepping into the mobile phone scene, thats yet another part of our lives they have access to.

Google the new Microsoft ?

you are VERY wrong! Google HAS many times assisted law enforcement and government when asked & pushed! You really need to watch CNN Headline news specifically titled "behind the mind of google"!!

This IS the biggest fish in regards to data on the Internet. AOL, Yahoo, CISCO, even Microsoft doesn't compare to the amount of personal data information on users!!

I thought I was alone in feeling this way with my post above. Sure Android does offer serious compelling features and add 's mix it's beautiful. Apple does restrict browsers and getting much flack for app approvals and developers - the fat rich originals - getting upset of the decision process but their adjusting. But I can choose my search provider within the browser plugin. One can just go to another Internet search providers URL but I'm concerned the underlying code in android sends info back to google.

X10 is an incredible device and Android allows for much customization to manufacturers so hopefully my fears will be I'll thought. 18mths to hold users data which is so tied and stating it's anonymous (bull) is a long time! Up until October Android was not fully open; the radio stack was released then.

um. obviously as an american corporation they are required to follow the laws in this country. if they are required by the court to give information then they must do so. My point is that they did not just volunteer it, as others do.

Anyway, it's all in the user agreements you ALL agree to when you sign up for an account. Quite frankly, if you don't want your information taken and used, then don't use their products. It's quite simple.

Back on topic...

I look forward to this device! All the rumors about it being available on ATT and Tmobile are interesting but to me, unrealistic. Right now it's estimated to be nearly $800USD when first released. To make it attractive as an option both providers would have to subsidize it down to at least $200 with contract. I highly doubt either of them are willing to flip the bill. I also don't want to see ATT's new data plan requirement for it if it does offer the x10. It's bad enough they're attempting to give incentives for users NOT to use so much data bandwidth on their networks. If they didn't spend all that money trying to sue Verizon for an injunction and paying luke wilson for ridiculous commercials they could have put up some more 3G towers or put it toward the upgrade to LTE...

I was looking at HTC bravo's specs last night and saw all the "missing" specs of x10 : radio,HD recording,AMOLED,dual led, divx support,16gb memory,Android 2.0 in package ... All these features i was talking about that x10 should have... knowing how the market works after all these years!
Plus any possible delay can make x10 to fail, once again
