I'm thinking of buying a G1 on ebay and naturally it's cheaper to get one locked to T-mobile.
I was just wondering how easy it is to unlock? Is it just a case of downloading a program for it like the iPhone or do you have to pay?

Plus, what's this I hear about 'rooting'? What is that?

hi

I got my hero unlocked at uniquephones.com they sent me the unlock code by email in about 5minutes, cost $20.
For rooting the g1 try modaco or xda-developers.

So you can't just unlock with software from XDA developers?

There is no software unlock for the G1, I got my unlock code from totalgsm very efficient service.

Rooting allows the user to have root access or superuser functionality of the handset as it is linux based and allows terminal access to the phone.

Have a good read up on things first Cyanogen is a good person to research.

You won't regret getting a G1!

I used http://www.unlock-tmobileg1.com/EN/unlock-T-Mobile+G1.php
it took about 2 hours but had no problems as had been said, you wont have any regrets going to android.

You'll also need your network's APN details for when you start the phone with your own sim in it for data.

Save the hassle and buy the new Rebel II simcard insert it in the G1 and aquire network just like i have done.
It works well and most of all it would not invalidate the warranty on my mobile phone,

Okay, thanks people.

Also, is there a way to make the G1 look like the Hero when on the home screen? I saw my friends hero and it's awesome!

And what, precisely, will rooting allow me to do?
