All Vista versions are a pain in the ass (well except the X64 edition) but they corrected several problems with SP2. still windows 7 is faster though (from boot speed, shut down etc) i have tested both beta and RC1 windows 7 before and i did really see the improvements. even the defunct 7000 beta performs better than vista sp1 hands down!

I'm using Windows 7 Professional, a genuine copy accessed through the Uni where I study my Bachelor of Computing Systems.

W7 feels like Vista done right.
Vista used 54% of my 2GB RAM just idling.
W7 is down to 34% - this means the fan runs less, makes less noise and the battery lasts longer. It also finds my Microsoft Bluetooth 5000 mouse about 2s after I switch the mouse on, where as Vista would take forever. W7 connects my Vodem in seconds, bypassing the annoying Vodafone dashboard software that Vista insists on running. It even works fine with my 2005 model Canon printer which was designed to work with XP. I love the new way the task bar works, the simplified File System and the file sharing via Windows Media Player.

This is a really good OS, much better than Vista ever was.

However, I've just put Ubuntu on another partition and thats really good as well. I'm a newbie when it comes to Linux and I've been relying on advice from more experienced classmates, but I like it just as much as W7.

I have another partition free for Google's Chrome OS which is due in October 2010. That'll mean my Vaio will be running 4 OS's (including Vista Home Premium SP2) + Fedora 10 Liveuser on a bootable 2GB memory stick, and my goal is to move all my media files off the Vaio, onto a large external HDD and just use the Vaio 250GB HDD for multiple OS's and their associated programs.

@carkitter:

are you using wubi to dual boot Ubuntu with your W7? my experience tells that it messes up the boot time speed, but after that the operation is very good.

I have been using Windows 7 Beta and found a lot lot quicker than Windows Vista. I am seriously considering getting it soon.

@razec
I'm not familiar with wubi. I have each OS on a separate partition so to switch between them requires a restart which is fine by me. Installing Ubuntu messed up the boot sequence so I had to open a Terminal and reset the boot sequence to automatically boot to W7, with a 5s delay to allow me to interrupt the process and choose Ubuntu or Vista.

The only trouble is that my BT mouse can't handle multiple OS's - it needs a new pairing each time so I'm going to have to move to a corded mouse to simplify things. Currently I just use the BT mouse with W7 only because it connects so fast.
BTW, these posts of mine are from Google Chrome 3.0 running on W7.
