Remember i-mate? The company that sold the JasJar and the Jas Jams not evry long ago. Well they seem to have abruptly shut shop and left for good. One more victim of the global meltdown?

Some of their phones were in my "wanted" lists . R.I.P

I think this was always on the cards from when HTC decided to do their own thing and stop supplying i-mate with hardware

From the day the HTC Meteor and TyTN landed, i-Mate seemed to get less and less popular. Must say though the JasJar was quite a machine in its day, and i remember the day i was getting my W900 on upgrade at Voda the guy in the cubical next to me was getting TWO JasJars lucky bugger. The 9502 also looked like a sweet PPC. RIP iMate.lol

Okay.. so maybe we jumped the gun a but i-mate might just spring back to life..

Slightly old (almost a week) but relevant here nevertheless: (Via Techtree)
Do you remember the story we published not long ago saying that i-mate, the once very high profile manufacturer of Windows Mobile powered devices, has shut shop?

Well, by the looks of it, we (and many others) jumped the proverbial gun - at least that is what the CEO of i-mate, Jim Morrisson has said. According to Morrison, the mobile devices maker will rise again, like a Phoenix, sooner or later. The decision to shut shop seems to be temporary because the company had to deal with a major fraud that was unearthed late in August. Apparently, that is what has prompted him to shut operations and lay off what was left of the staff at the company's Dubai office.

In fact, i-mate was in the process of developing a new line of products when this "fraud" surfaced and jeopardized the company's fortunes. The scam seems to have affected i-mate's ability to pay its employees in Dubai and has deepened the crisis following which it had to shut shop and Jim had to leave the country.

The silver lining is that Jim has every intention to restart its operations and also adds that the new i-mate products that were designed earlier this year are still ready for launch. All he needs now is some much needed funding and a little respite from his ex-colleagues who have taken the matter to regulatory authorities in the UAE and are thus making things more difficult for him to restart business in the UAE.

So, will they be back? Hmm..

Remind me to hold my breath!

Seriously, as Masseur says, the company was on the down escalator as soon as HTC stopped making their phones and switched to their own brand. i-Mate really didn't have much going for them other than HTC's own designs - the earlier phones people remember them for were all HTC products at heart.

Their last big release, the 9502, sounded great on paper - but was an ugly and unwieldy beast in RL. I can't imagine sales were high.
