Mono tapes only?  you'll Probebly have to close the circuit, stick it to your chest might work.

it is so simple but also very good ... you make some contacts in the headphones and you connect by pushing it in ... one headphone is pauze or to take calls and so on. |

Ive had some AKG cans that pause music when you take them off, had them for about 4 years now.

the sensor embedded in the earplugs recognize temperature gradient/changes when it comes in contact with human skin.
so if the ear is a fake one from a mannequin, then it won't work
