Nokia and Microsoft Alliance |

So Nokia has signed a deal with Microsoft to use a mobile version of Office 2010 but Nokia have confirmed that they won't be running WM on Nokia handsets. Analysts seem to be reading all sorts of things into this annoncement. Some are saying it's the end for Windows Mobile while others are saying it's the end for Symbian.
No-one seems to be saying it's the end for Apple and RIM who's respective success is likely the reason for the alliance along with the impending explosion of Android devices.
What do you think is happening? Are the days of WM numbered? Are the days of Symbian numbered? Do we care? Would Office 2010 make you buy a S60 device? Will Smartbooks take over from smartphones? And most importantly, how will it affect who are developing on 3 platforms?

I dont like WM system i tried it once i hated it. Symbian on the other hand is better but its still too slow for me. I am looking forward to new Android Sony Ericsson handsets. Perhaps thats the future who knows. Though i say i think Symbian is slow my last Symbian phone was an N73 which was ages ago and slow. I have no idea about this new venture with Nokia. Sounds good.

Seeing it from the side, they let go uiq and then jumped to the winmo. Now they let it go for android. Satio will run symbian s60 5th edition. So i could say it's not the end for the symbian s60 5th edition but winmo.

Microsoft already said they would stop with WinMo in 2 years.

@masseur: Maybe at the rumours forums
Microsoft wants to put their office products on nokia phones. That's it.

there's a topic (that I started) in the rumours forum called "Microsoft to exit mobile OS market in 2 years?", but thats 3rd party speculation... Microsoft never said it themselves, in fact they are actively denying it from what I have read

I've read speculation from analysts about a 2yr deadline but Microsoft are still saying they remain committed to WM long term.

I tried to find where I've read it, but it seems I misremembered, and that it was in your rumour thread. I'll try to be more carefull in the future.

If I was in SE's shoes I would be very nervous about developing further WM phones. How would you like to spend time and money developing a WM device and while marketing it, be overshadowed by an announcement that the platform is being dropped?
Symbian is a OS foundation now, does this mean that Office Mobile will be available to all the SF members? That's not how I read the announcement. With WM's future uncertain should SE sign a deal with M$ for Symbian access to Office Mobile too or let Nokia gain an advantage in the business Smartphone market?
The best option for SE could very well be Android but sales of Android devices have yet to make a dent against the established leaders in the platform race.

^ couldnt agree more.
Anyway i hope this MSOffice is a lot better than Quickoffice. Saw one of my mates had set up his whole time table for lectures on his TouchDiamond even when we were at highschool last year he had done it, think he was using Excel? Anyway would love to have that on my S60.

where did it mention anyone dropping anything?
the announcement is about microsoft making Office for Symbian handsets... and i'm sure itll be for a nice hefty license fee per handset. Symbian has largest market share so it makes sense... I just cant see an announcement anywhere that microsoft are only using symbian or are dropping anything!!! |

@voda jon
Nothing has been dropped yet but the questions are rightly being asked. Why would Microsoft give away it's competitive advantage and give consumers an extra reason to buy a Symbian device?
