My bet is that they'll continue selling the current 3G at the announced cheaper price at least until they clear all the stock currently in existence. I doubt they'll manufacture many more, but I bet there's plenty across the world that need to be gotten rid of.
And like RyaN sort of suggested, I bet when the 4th gen comes out next year (kind of sucks to think they're doing the iPod Nano 'one every year' thing with something so expensive huh?), then they'll make this 3GS the cheaper model until it's all cleared out of stock.

btw, if you use quidco and buy from CPW, you get £45 back. Unfortunately iphone is excluded from quicdo when buying direct from O2
Does this quidco discount apply to the PAYG version or contract?

Yep, exactly - unlike last year when they had a bit of a firesale to get rid of all stocks of the 1st gen iPhone just before the 3G was announced, this year they've kept the price of the 3G steady and will still have plenty of stock. So it becomes a cheap entry level option (for now) and the iPhone reaches an even wider audience.
At some point stocks will start to dry up and it won't make sense to manufacture any more, so perhaps in the run up to Christmas we'll see an "S" model replace it.
O2's pricing meanwhile doesn't make a lot of sense, and doesn't seem to match up with Apple's intentions at all. I don't understand how Apple can have halved the dollar price for the standard 3G 8GB for example, but if I were to go to the O2 online shop right now and order it on my choice of contract, I'd be paying exactly the same as I did last October...?

I really can see them keeping the 3G as an entry level option for some time. All the manufacturers have to do with the current 3G casing for the 3GS is scribe a little [S] on the back and '32GB' and it's good to go!! lol
I think keeping the 3G in the line up is the best most intelligent move by Apple, more so than bringing out the 3GS. It gives people that option of adopting the iPhone, and essentially buying apps in the future. Good move.

It makes sense as long as the 3G is cheaper, but here in the UK it's not unless you take out a two year contract, which isn't exactly much of a come on to the lower end of the market. Shame really.

I'll be getting one for sure
saying there is no new features is just wrong
Just what is new?
Ummm how about
Cortex A8 processor.
SGX OpenGL es2.0 graphics
Compass, which means maps will automatically orientate based on the direction you are pointing.
Compass also provides another control mechanism for gaming
Tap for focus (good idea)
Plus a lot of things that most other phones have had for ages. The new feature set means that the iphone is now missing very few "standard" features (which was the main reason I havn't gone for one), and now has the fastest processor/graphics combo (along with i8910), and some innovative new things. I wanted to get one for a while now, to get access to the app store, but the quirky missing things were putting me off.

That Cortex processor has a max clock speed of 833mhz
Let´s take a minute to compare that (plus 256mb of RAM) with the N97...

So does this upgrade in RAM mean that you can multitask now on the iPhone3GS? Can you realy compare this to N97? It seems to me that N97 will be a niche device, i cant see it reaching N95 sales, although NOKIA hopes it will.

Just read in The Daily Mail today that Apple are planning on releasing a budget version of the iphone on pay as you go for mass market which could cost £100
