The world's biggest mobile phone makers and network operators have backed plans to create a universal phone recharger.
Most manufacturers now produce chargers which work only with their own devices.
The re-charger will consume 50% less stand-by energy than today's cables, the GSM Association (GSMA), an umbrella group for the industry, said.
Firms to back the plan include Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Orange, 3, AT&T and Vodafone.
The majority of new handsets will support the re-charger by 2012.

Wonder if it'll be an all-new port design, or a manufacturer's existing one(a la Sharp in Japan)??

I have a charger of this kind at my possesion. I will post you the pictures tommorow if not today.
Here is a description of what I have: Its a two pin charger which its base comes as a universal charger every batter when detached from the phone.
2. The base has a USB port that connects a USB cable.
3. The cable at the end has pins which connect to different phones.
I use it to charge my motorola v360, my nokia n73, nokia 3310 and an LG c1100.

I hate the current Nokia chargers they are so thin wired and the pin you put into the phone end is also fragile too. And Sony Ericsson the plug is too BIG but more robust. This is welcome this change.
Phone?? What phone?? |
