I think the only saving grace for SE is that it is involved in the Symbian Foundation project. Hopefully with some fresh new harware they can improve on their current position.

hope SE goes 7-8 if they continue with the copy-paste phones. LG is innovating SE doesn't deserve 3rd place |

I would actually prefer it if they sold less phones and concentrated on bringing that back that 'Wow' factor that we haven't seen in a while.
110% Agreed

Guys. Looking through the broader scenario, SE has done really well in the 2nd half of 2008. When recession has built in, it has kept its stand from the previous quarter. Moto though has sold almost 100 million handsets this year have only sold 19 million in Q4. LG holds the same scenario. Thus Its advantage SE in H2 2008, but H1 2008 really sealed the deal. So we should be happy that SE is actually moving forward with their enterprise rather than looking at their year to year position.
why do people say things like this???
SE has has not done well. SE, LG, nokia, samsung, and moto all inhabit the same planet earth where they have ALL been subject to exactly the same financial pressures.
you make it sound as if the rest live in a vacuum, and only SE has been subject to financial pressure.
SE is going the same way as moto if there isn't a change in their tactics.........down down down.

Nothing is wrong at this moment, did you guys read the Q4 report from Nokia?? then you will be surprised..
So SE is not the only one
...yeah but unfortunately there can only be one ranking at 5th, and that just so happens to be SE.

Lol why?
Anyways, I personally thought SE would get the 3rd place.
But if you think about it, they should be HAPPY with the 5th place. I haven't seen one phone with the WOW-factor. For example the N95 is still a very good mobile and beats most of the new SE phones! |

nokia shipment go down.... samsung shipment go up but their profit down 69% sequentially.....LG shipment up...profit i didn't read all.... SE shipment down sequentially and profit also down.
motorola...well no need to read its quarter report since when they announced trimming 4k of their mobile phone division employees...they have claimed they only ship 19million which is less than q3.
i hope it won't trigger to that everyone stop being innovative.....since even intel is suffering now. |

LG have posted a record Q4 loss of 690 million dollars.
And its only the past week that SE have beaten them. And anyway, SE's average selling price is way above their competitors. Its because of SE's high end strategy have they declined in this quarter.
In india atleast, the only highend that is selling is the C905. Just bought it a couple of days back. Even the owner of the shop uses one. |

the Q4 loss of LG electronics has to be put into context - a big chunk came from to subsidiaries involved in LCD displays :
"A bright spot for the company, which also makes household appliances and personal computers, was an 8 percent increase in shipments of mobile phones to 25.7 million, LG said in a release. That pushed its 2008 handset sales to a record 100.7 million, up from 80.5 million in 2007.
Earnings were hurt by 294 billion won of equity-accounted losses from overseas subsidiaries and affiliates, including 214 billion won from flat panel manufacturer LG Display Co., which is 37.9 percent owned by LG."
Mobiles, appliances & PC's had a strong showing - these are probably the only divisions which won't be restructured.

2007 was a massive year for SE handset sales allowing SE to reach 100 million sales for the first time and now, heading into a serious recession on top of a shift in sales away from SE's niche, 2008 sales are 96.6 million - down only 3.5%. In the current market conditions I'd be satisfied with that but looking for SE to do better in 2009.
The signs are good for SE with better featured phones such as + AF in the W902; a N95 competitor at last in the C905; Wifi in the mid range -G705, W705/W715; dabling with different platforms - WM, Symbian Foundation and Open Handset Alliance; Clear Audio and Clear bass restoring faith in the lineup and fewer low end phones to restore the prestige and profitability of the brand.
The trouble is, anyone who's had a iPhone 3G is gonna have trouble going back to a SE phone until SE get a multi-touch screen and some decent downloadable apps. The first can be sorted with some hard work but the second really relies on WM/SF/Android becoming a viable alternative to the rich comsumer experience the iPhone platform enjoys. Let's face it, Apple changed everything and the future is smartphones but not the oddball smartphones of the past. I'm looking forward to the smartphones SE is planning for 2010 release, that's when we should really see some serious upward movement in SE sales.
