Isn't the "a" for North and Latin American versions that have 850mhz?

That is correct. A is for the U.S. of A(!).
Major difference for that 850 band is the a version has only qVGA / 24 frames recording, while the I version has full VGA / 30 frames!

Other then that it looks the same. If you go to system / device details it will probably say x1a instead of x1i (as on mine!).

The X1a may not have a second camera for video calling. I may be wrong though.
