Sony Ericsson joins Open Handset Alliance
09 December 2008

London, December 9 2008 – Sony Ericsson today announced the extension of its portfolio strategy to include support for the Open Handset Alliance

“Sony Ericsson is excited to announce its membership of the Open Handset Alliance and confirm its intention to develop a handset based on the Android platform,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, CVP and head of Creation and Development at Sony Ericsson. “We believe Sony Ericsson can bring a wealth of experience in making consumer focused multimedia handsets with new user experience to the Alliance drawing on the successes of the Walkman and Cyber-shot sub-brands. Sony Ericsson is a strong supporter of open operating systems and we believe the Open Handset Alliance offers an exciting opportunity for a new and unique user experience only Sony Ericsson can deliver.”

Membership of the Open Handset Alliance will complement the company’s existing Open OS strategy which is based on the Symbian and Windows Mobile platforms.

That's mean Smartphones from 3 ways, from MS,Googel, and Symbian..
S60 with touch functions, lets see how the UI will be, friendly UI is most important, but X1 UI was not the best..

A fairly obvious move for them at the moment - keeping their options open. It's a shame they're simply following others though - I'd like to see them develop something new for themselves, but I think those days are long behind SE now.

not really, depends on how se will use their r&d for android and how they implement it in their phone, if it was g1 type phone then it would be cheap, but i suppose that wont happen tho...it has to be lot better than that...

After the disappointment of the G1 and the who-are-they Agora, we might finally see a drool worthy Google handset!

This is the best move by SE in the past 12 months. The potential of android is just amazing.I own a G1,its not perfect yet but am not disappointed at all.
I can't wait to see what SE will bring out.

Good news. but that would mean no more A-series high end phones in the future as they will be replaced by android with much better hardware. SE can easily apply their knowledge in java development in that field as well.

After ditching Symbian UIQ...it's a great move for SE to try something else.
Would they still be doing Symbian S60?

This just another false dawn, will mess about with this then drop it when they finally realise their SW developers are just as inept with this as they were with UIQ.

IMHO a Linux type OS is the way to go, it will allow for really creative application development, but not with Apples "Kiddys Crayon " style of interface please, we need handwriting recognition not old fashioned screen tap input methods.
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot.
