Despite me having transplanted cases dozens of times, I made this mistake a week ago! Felt like a real idiot!

This was on my K810i. I fixed it the only way you can, which was to buy a spares/repairs K810i from ebay, and take it apart.

I know this is a K810i, and I'm not sure how similar the insides are, but they should be pretty much the same.

1. So prise the housing of the phone open, as you did before. You can see below the broken switch, and highlighted in red is the part you need to remove. It is all one piece of plastic, with the Xenon flash and batteries attached.

2. The plastic section is attached by clips, and a connector, which is fixed UNDER the screen, on the other side (highlighted below by the arrow). You need to unclip the screen on the other side, so you can disconnect this part, and remove the plastic section (In red)

3. The screen is held on by clips, but also has a couple of connections to the circuit board. Lift it gently and slowly so you don't disconnect or damage anything.
With the screen up (In Green), you can see the connector (In Red). Using some tweasers, gently pull it out. Then, fold it back out of the way, and clip the screen back into place.

4. Now with the connection out, it is a case of again, gently and slowly working your way around the plastic section your removing, unclipping it. Then, gently remove it and you're half done!

Now do the same with the donor phone, and install that part into your phone!

HUGE IMPORTANT PART!

WHEN PUTTING THE REAR CASING BACK ON, MAKE SURE THE SHUTTER COVER IS CLOSED!!!!
OTHERWISE, THE HOOK THAT TRIPS THE SWITCH WILL BE PLACED BELOW THE SWITCH, AND WHEN SLID UP, IT WILL BREAK IT AGAIN!!!!

As I said, I know this is a K810i, but it should be very similar. Hope it helps as a guide anyway!

Marty!
Thanks for your post! What a nice illustration!

I stupidly had the lens cover opened while I was removing the housing...

So, in picture 1, the silver part being pointed to by the white arrow is the micro switch right? And if it is not broken it should have a little arm sticking out onto the track where the lens cover will slide over and trigger.

In my K800i, there is the micro switch, however, there is nothing sticking out from it to the white arrow side.

Can I just fix the micro switch, e.g. add the arm back?

Yes correct, that is the switch, and yes, it should have a little arm on it. By putting the rear case back on with the shutter open, the little arm ends up above the clip from the shutter. As you push the shutter closed, it pushes the switch the wrong way and snaps the arm off.

You can't just change the switch I'm afraid. It's too tiny a job. Impossible. This the only way to do it. As long as you go slowly and be careful, you'll be fine

You could change that part yes, as it's stuck down on top of the plastic part. However, this bit of circuit is attached to the A/F light and the Xenon too. Not sure if there is any type of soldering required, might end up being more tricky.

Hang on , apologies I've just seen the Xenon is included. Yes that would be even better!
You will be able to peel the piece off and put the new one on, but you will still need to follow my guide as you will need to lift the screen to disconnect the old one etc.

The part you've linked to from CNN is the correct part. The switch is part of the complete circuit ribbon that holds the xenon flash and the capasitors (sp??) to fire the flash.
You cannot just install the switch seperatly onto your existing ribbon. The whole lot must be replaced.
Marty's guide seems to be correct from what I can see so you have your answer. All you need to do now is buy the part you need and swap them over.
I tried sniffing coke once but didnt like it. The bubbles kept going up my nose

I've bought the part from an eBay source, and changed it...
The switch works fine now, but ... Damn... the flash doesn't work at all! (even doesn't work in the hidden test menu)
