All the sudden my jog dial "click" has stopped working. Scrolling works, but not the click.

Physically, it still clicks but the software doesn't respond. Ideas anyone? :/

This is usualy due to fluff caught in the mechanism - if you're brave enough, take it apart ant blow out any crap caught in the wheel etc.

Thanks for the reply.

Thing is, I already did take it apart. Didn't mention it because I wanted to hear some thoughts first. Here are some details:

It started yesterday. At first, whole jog dial refused to work, not even scrolling up and down. It was a rainy day so I assumed it has gotten wet. Since it still didn't work after a while but did show signs of life (occasionally it would scroll up/down) I then suspected on dust so I took it apart completely and blown around the jog with a 2 way vacuum cleaner. That fixed the scrolling but the "click" still doesn't work.

Moreover, I am getting the feeling that my battery life has gotten much shorter and starting to think that there could be some kind of short circuit around. Truth is, I'm very confused and posted this out of despair hoping that someone had the same problem.

The dial itself looks very closed up, it's not like a mouse wheel which kinda breaks apart as soon as you open the mouse so you can see how it works. For that reason I was afraid to attempt taking the dial apart, but I was kinda able to see how the "clicking" works. It's like a small copper contact floating above a small copper plate and when you push the button the contact goes down and touches the plate. This physically works, when I push the button contact is touching the plate so I poured a drop of contact cleaning spray on the plate and waited for it to dry. It changed nothing though. The software still doesn't "recognize" the click.

Oh one more thing, I have looked at the P1 Service Manual by SE and there is no mention of the jog dial. It looks as if the jog dial can't be repaired or even replaced, likely hard connected to the motherboard without any sockets.

I had jog dial problem with my P1 recently. While scrolling it would suddenly jump several notches in the other direction. Using SEUS to reflash didn't help but fortunately my P1 is still under warranty and SE replaced the jog wheel. Well, they did put in a P990 jog wheel instead of the black P1 wheel but at least they didn't mess up the phone further.
PS.: I forgot to add that cleaning with pressurized air didn't help either.

theres a user guide for taking apart the p1i soemwhere in this site. a search wil lthrow it up

read it and confirm where u might have gone wrong, which lead to the batetry problem

meanwhile, all scroll problems are usually because of dust acumulation on the contact points.

Battery has definitely gone crazy. I drained the battery yesterday until the phone shut down. Then I charged it with the phone off until it fully charged and went to sleep. It went from 100 to 50% overnight just being on standby.

@sigea
I think the battery problem started before I opened it. Even if not, the disassembling process is not that hard. I was following both the guide you're referring to and the service manual from SE. I'm rethinking the whole process in my head now and can't think of where I might have gone wrong to cause this problem. If I did something wrong, likely something else would stop working like keyboard or some buttons but everything works perfectly except for the jog dial click and the battery.

Its preferred one uses a sterile environment during disassembly.
Even static electricity is known to cause havoc .

Eitherways if nothing works, do take it to the SE service centre if its under a warranty

In one of my old P990s I had this battery problem where it started draining like 10% / hour. It turned out to be a hw problem and my phone was replaced by SE.

If you read the first sentence in my first post in this topic you'll find it says: "All the sudden my jog dial "click" has stopped working". Well now, it started working again in the same manner.

I don't even know why I'm posting this, not like it's gonna help anyone but there you have it. I just tried to click the dial like hoping it would be magically fixed and, well, it is... doubt it was really magic though.

Battery problem still seems to be there but I'll test it further.

Bro,the jog dial part couldn't repair or disassemble,it's compact structure from manufacture.
Better you replace it with the new one.
Watching ur story,it is just mechanical failure in the metal connector in the jog dial.
It is not electrical failure I mean.

Yeah, so much i figured, although some people said SE replaced their jog dial when it was malfunctioning. So it is replaceable in theory, just not as easily attached/removed as the display or keyboard.

BTW if anyone didn't get it yet: if I could replace my phone with a new one, I wouldn't try to disassemble it myself or even bother writing here. The phone is out of warranty period.

I may be biased now, but it seems my battery life has improved. It doesn't feel very long but it does feel like it lasts longer now. I'm guessing the battery is just used up and doesn't have the capacity it once had. If that's the case, then my whole problem has magically vanished. Will take some time until I can be sure how well the battery is performing.
