Sony Ericsson pulls the plug on its UK flagship retail store
High Street Kensington outlet ditched as Sony Ericsson rules out any more stores
Sony Ericsson will pull the plug on its only UK high street store before the end of the year because it is failing to make a profit.
The large High Street Kensington store, which covers two units, was the first Sony Ericsson store in the world when it opened in November 2006 as a joint venture with Carphone Warehouse.
At the time of the opening in west London, the manufacturer’s senior executives said that although the store was primarily intended to showcase Sony Ericsson’s handsets, the store would ‘not be a money pit’.
Sony Ericsson has now ruled out any new stores in the UK and western Europe for the foreseeable future. Instead it has decided to put its retail resources into Asian markets, such as India, which it considers is a more effective use of its retail budget.

Funny how this story came up right after the store was being discussed in another thread.

It's a big difference indeed. The store seems to be a lot more expensive than the ootsale.co.uk

I went to the SE shop in Kensington High Street for the first time today, after hearing rumours that it was to close. I was initially a bit fed up about this news, as I had just discovered it existed, however after visiting the shop I think that the best thing is for it to close and after a lot of thinking and redesigning by SE, for a new one to open.
Compared to the Nokia shop in Regents Street, the SE shop is tacky and cheap in the extreme. The white plastic looks terrible, and certainly doesn't highlight the phones in their best light. Nokia has a cool black subdued vibe going on - it makes the phones look luxurious and really makes you want to buy something.
The Nokia phones are all priced - it's easy to see exactly what each phone will cost you. The SE shop had no prices on any of the phones. I think that this is due to the fact that the SE shop is run by Carphone Warehouse. BIG MISTAKE.
Probably most importantly, the range of phones on show was really poor. There were P990's there, for goodness' sake!! SE has loads of nice phones on the market, but there were hardly any of the new models there at all.
With the amount of advertising that James Bond is currently getting, and with his SE tie-in I would expect a major feature, perhaps even a few new 007-themed Sony laptops...? No. Nothing at all.
The girl who served me was very friendly and knew her stuff, but that's just papering over the cracks.
Very disappointed. Hopefully SE will see the error of their ways and do their own store, and do it properly. Please, SE...??

Mm, interesting. Apparently, one of the guys in there wasn't aware his store was being closed down.

Still with fans here in the western hemishpere suffering a lack of stores, every store closure is not good. A physical location for warranties/repairs is always a plus.
