Texting bug hits the Google phone

first, let me say that today is not April 1st!

A text conversation has revealed a big problem with the G1 mobile phone - powered by Google's Android software.

The newly discovered bug causes the phone to restart when owners type in the word "reboot" soon after starting up the device.

That article didn't quite explain it fully. Apparently 'reboot' isn't the only word to cause problems. If you type any command line at all into the G1 and then press enter, it will carry it out the command!

Yes but it happens no matter where you write it, so if you write reboot in an email or text message without knowing about the bug, and then press enter, the phone will reboot (and you'll probably lose all the text you wrote and have to start over!).

Embarrasing. Really makes you wonder what else has slipped through, if the software quality control is that lax.

I tried the G1 yesterday and have to say I was very impressed the unit I held was well built and the keyboard was great.

I am converted! but as I have to carry a huge contacts book with me 900+ syncing is a real issue for me at present, however I have no doubt that this is going to be one of a number of new OS "more ARE coming next year"! that will start to transform the "smart phone" market.
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot.

Took mine back and got it replaced with a new one as there were a few issues. My big problem is the battery life, its so poor, i have to charge it sometimes twice a day !!!

I still get the impression that, for all the attempted hype and Android-based excitement, this is a real flop. What's really good about this phone? What's good about Android?

The battery life thing is really worrying - this is a mobile OS, supposedly designed that way from the ground up - surely they should have made it more power efficient as a priority? I can understand a lot of things being a bit beta in such a new OS, but it should never have launched as a product without at least a day's comfortable battery life.

I should have gussed the battery would have been bad as its an HTC made phone and every phone i have from HTC has had a poor battery.

I think in time there will be some great phones on this platform out there which will get close to the iphone, which for me is still the best phone (not smart) out there.

To be fair, all HTC's other phones are WinMo, and WM tends to have pretty poor battery life too, but not as bad as some of the G1 horror stories I've been reading. How big is the battery on the G1, in "mah"? I mean the hardware is broadly similar to many WM phones out there (same processor etc) so it really comes down to two variables - the size of the supplied battery, and the efficiency of the OS and applications...
