Just wanting some opinions really.

I have always been a fan of the P series but have got to admit when the P990i came out I stormed down to my local Vodafone shop and ordered them to give me one on the day of release LOL which I did and I was SO disappointed, much preferred my P910i then the P990i.

Just wondering how the P1i stakes up really?

I must admit that the p1 is great phone. It has great hardware and software performance. It suits all my needs at the moments and I think it is worth the price.

Yeah, agree with that. Price is low, it has a few options the other smartphones just doesn't have (copy/paste in other programs than the core package, common interface in UIQ based apps, things of that sort. Excellent keyboard. It won't wear out very easily, and it can take a punch. Jukebox is above average, even if the themes on it must be modded manually. And you can buy good earplugs with a remote, and 3.5mm jack).

Battery life is about two days of active use (I.e., listening to music while browsing on way to and from work, calling 20- 30 mins, typing some notes, updating the calendar, while having push- mail up all day - two days of that with 3g shut off).

So comparing it to other devices, it's very good (even if it doesn't look all that flashy). So it's not just a phone with some extra graphics. It's actually useful.

Things that irritate me would be that there are problems with the amount of characters you paste into some fields, and that copying an entire page out of some apps sometimes lose you a few lines. But that's.. like I said - compared to other devices.. And it's dependent on the particular app you're running, and how the interface is implemented, it seems - the standard class works fine... It's not like you won't have the same problems on other platforms with the same app.. Shame it's with the inbuilt Opera browser, for example, and that it won't be updated...

The stability is also incredibly good, even if the SE apps for the connections and so isn't completely.. consistent. A few people have had the message- notifications suddenly disappear, the message app sometimes says "locked" after manually closing the connection (and you need to restart the app. Happened a few times for me, at least). Restarts are rare and typically are connected with some system- service or inbuilt SE program screwing up and eventually eating up some other running app's memory, it seems.. But I've had one restart like that since May.

The speed is always a worry - the problem here is that the menu- apps made by SE, and the message app, even the contact app (including the profile pics every time you change a screen. Opera 8.65) - all dilligently write to the disk, and read from the disk on every operation. When there's absolutely no point whatsoever to do it. And that makes the menus flip like glue sometimes - the app- launcher in particular is criminally badly written. I've no doubt that the increased battery drain on the g900 comes from that kind of thing.

But the processor is more than fast enough, so all other apps - Mobipocket reader, OpenOffice, etc., are fast in operation, and it's quick to switch between them (well.. counting out the usual scripting routine that takes a second to load and flip past different screens on the SE task manager..). Of course, flipping speed is also dependent on how well the apps are made, and if they're loading from RAM instead of disk, etc. So it's perfectly possible to use the phone for a lot of things and not be pissed off by all that many pauses or lag. Another good thing is that the phone won't grind to a halt just because you're running something in the background - start a download, and then prepare a bt- keyboard while the page loads.. not a problem. Checking the mail while browsing.. works fine.

Also seems to be a few more nice apps turning up as well - and I'm not really reaching if I'm saying that I don't expect any smartphones turning up in the next couple of years that have this kind of solid grounding. Maybe things'll look prettier, that there will be better resolutions - more specially made custom serviices implemented on the phones, etc.. But I really don't see anything this useful turning up on the mobile market in the near future.

Because.. just to be specific.. if linux takes off on mobile, we're still far away from having a consistent and well- polished set of common interfaces. And there's no guarantee that those phones won't be prepped with their own proprietary screens that's impossible to bypass. Or comes with apps running in the background that can't be turned off, etc. The same goes for Symbian+ with the foundation as well.

So I'm waiting for a smaller PC/MID with a touchscreen running on a RISC- processor like ARM (i.e, with a chipset that won't offset a small processor- load for usual operation, and better batteries). In the sense that I'll rather buy a 30x10 MID and keep a smaller phone, than buying another smartphone.. Simply because the potential isn't being used - and obviously isn't going to be used by the phonemakers. For anything other than making glorified picture- viewers. Example - SE will spend money on making a jukebox- app, but won't integrate it into the UIQ themes. Even though it actually uses the same type of definition files. Why? Who knows. They'll launch a new music- store.. but how many people will really use this, rather than just downloading it on their computer. Where they can trust their files will stay put, or won't be disappeared into a protected folder, etc. *shrug*

But while waiting for something better to turn up, I'm sticking with the p1, I guess.

Yeah it should be great to make a successor of the P1 with the same design. As the M600 and P1 are same form factor but different performance.

1. It hasn't got built in gps receiver but I think it can use BT GPS receiver and maps over wifi or gprs.
2. It can record sound in amr format. Performance is average.
3. You can use opera mini of course and any other java or UIQ browser without problems.
4. It can get installed Walkman 3 application from W960. It is not flashed, you just add the application.

Ah. But Mobile-review, insiders, MacWorld consultants, etc. (read: SE's focus group, generally speaking) all disagree. Therefore, since it doesn't look like Nokia, and doesn't come with smashing new proprietary software that makes you pay per button- press, and has a touch- screen - it's a steaming pile of shit. And should not be supported in favour of Windows Mobile.

Thus, completely legitimate complaints on broken functionality was shafted the list of possible improvements the engineering teams should be working on, in February this year, after the latest firmware.

And therefore, Opengl ES on future SE projects is dead. And even less phones at the moment will be able to actually run OpenGL apps based on Opengl code (as opposed to marginally implemented WM apis). But since we can create weather- applications in Visual bloody C, no one cares about that.

Sad but true. Sad, but ¤%&ng true.

There is no call recording option still. but modders are working on it and it should be available imho. Anyway about the GPS, you can use GPS (maps) over wifi or gprs and with external bluetooth GPS receiver. (I'm not 100% sure about the gps receiver...)

@ mobile_fish

Yes you can use any GPS module with Bluetooth support. There is a GPS Accessory by Sony Ericsson called HGE-100. its like headset, connects through your phones fast port. it can be used as a normal headphone and a GPS receiver. i will recommends this accessory.

And the built in browser on the P1 itself is Opera Mini 8.65, which doesn't support the full HTML that you are talking about. But you can install Opera Mini 4.1 and have Full HTML browsing, la your PC.

EDIT: @Nipsen, that was Funny
