Does anybody know what software platform these phones (SO906i / 706i) run? Is it based on UIQ Symbian / Sony Ericsson A40 , or something totally different? |

In Japan, I bet they're so used to these frequent announcements and high spec, that they're all just like "oh no, more phones!"
While we're all drooling everywhere else in the world...

Japanese Symbian phones uses Symbian MOAP platform
@Guys: take a look at how dwarfish the screen of NM(nokia) model, it's a shame that they did not use N95 or E90 screen so as to compete with the king of displays. anyway i can't deem any nokia model as a good match for the incredible aquos, viera or bravia displays i wish samsung could also establish a market for Japan and so that they can use their big brains to fully utilize their potential to make displays for Japan TV phones and compete with it's fellow kings

Not all. Sony Ericsson phones for au KDDI aren't based on MOAP. DoCoMo SO705i is Linux-based AFAIK.
from my observations, sometimes it's better off not knowing. |

Thanks razek and whiteEye.
So all manufactures use the same platform?
Also, does the 906i name mean that all variants (by different manufactures) use some sort of common hardware? or have similar feature sets..

Not same platform, not same hardware, but they share some common features like GPS, WVGA display, GSM roaming, electronic payment, etc. 906i is just indeX and indeXing is fully governed by the operator. 906i means this line up is released few months after 905i line up. And 905i line up is after 904i and 903i and so on. 90Xi for high-end and 70Xi for mid-end.

That's interesting - so the operator controls nomenclature & has large influence on the development and release cycles of the phone manufacturers. |
